Wow, surprised myself at getting them all. Usually at least a few tossups in these T/F ones. Good stuff! I had the advantage of living in the northernmost state, so wasn't fooled by that. :-)

Minnesota has a "northwest angle"... no border post between there and Canada.

Shouldn't it be Oman has a monarchy, unless the whole population is now in the monarchy? (Nitpick, I know)
+17
Level 76

I'm almost certain it's fine because a monarchy is also a system of government as well as the collective group of monarchs. You would say that "The US is a democracy", "North Korea is a dictatorship", so I'm pretty sure saying that Oman is a monarchy is fine too.
+11
Level 82

No, you're wrong. Monarchy is a system of government or a country (or other entity) with such system.

I found the question numbers 3, 13, 14 a bit irrelevant.

These questions are more national based and not international general knowledge

+15
Level 70

Why are they any more "national based" than 1, 4, 9, 11, 16, 17 or 18?

umm, the fact that the quiz included questions from more than 1 country makes it international... I don't really see how something can NOT be international; with the exception of Antarctica, certain rivers, parts of lakes and oceans, international groups (EU and such), and continents, there are not any "international" general knowledge questions.

It's geography, of course it's international.

Look at a map, read a wikipedia page.

You either know it or you don't.

Washington is north of Maine!? I feel like maps have been lying to me my whole life.

Agree. That is absolutely not how it looks on google maps.
+8
Level 45

Maps are misleading you. It's very hard to show a 3-D object on a 2-D projection, so it will be misleading. The latitude is key for this as opposed to using a map (even a map with lines of latitude will be hard to decipher though because the values are so close to each other; all states along the US-Canada border seem to be within two degrees of each other). According to an online interactive weather map, Washington to North Dakota is a maximum latitude of ~48.78* while Minnesota has a maximum of ~49.14* and Maine is ~47.29*.

Look at a map (Google or otherwise) and it clearly shows the flat line of the border on the western half of the top of the country being above Maine.

How is it misleading? You wouldn't say California isn't on the Pacific ocean because only the coast is.

+8
Level 51
Nov 9, 2019
Use the Prime Meridian, as it cuts down the middle of the earth...so the entire half that's to the left of the Prime Meridian would be the western hemisphere.

Norway has territory in Africa (Bouvet Island) and is more northern than Tunisia
+15
Level 71
Nov 11, 2019
Since when is Norway an african country? As the first reply states, bouvet island is also in Antarctica and not Africa.

By your logic the UK would be the most southernmost country and France the westernmost and easternmost country in Europe

+1
Level 66
May 18, 2023
It looks like Bouvet is 1500 miles south of Africa, towards Antarctica - for anyone else reading that for the first time. Not what I would call African - maybe it could be on the same tectonic plate? but I wouldn't count on winning a bar bet

Sorry but Oman isn't a Monarchy, it's a Sultanate. The leader of a monarchy is King / Queen (the UK, Saudi Arabia, etc), and the head of a sultanate is a Sultan (with only Oman and Brunei being Sultanates). It might seem like a detail but King and Sultan aren't the same thing.

This is too narrow an understanding of monarchy. In addition to kingdoms (led by a king/queen), countries led by hereditary emperors (Japan), princes (Liechtenstein), dukes (Luxembourg) and yes, sultans (Brunei, Malaysia, Oman) are also considered monarchies.

How can I find a latitudinally-correct map of the world? Missed Maine and Tunisia :/ Tunisia is pretty clear, I just thought it was more nestled in Algeria

From wiki:

Northwest Angle Inlet in Lake of the Woods, Minnesota 49°23′04.1″N 95°9′12.2″W – northernmost point in the 48 contiguous states

Sumas, Washington 49°00′08.6″N 122°15′40″W – northernmost incorporated place in the 48 contiguous states

Lynden, Washington 48°56′43″N 122°27′10″W – .. city of more than 10,000 residents..

Everett, Washington 47°58′41″N 122°12′27″W – .. >100,000 residents

Antarctica may not have current vegetation, but I I figured it would have had tree and plant species in its distant past. Sure enough, they have discovered tree fossils in Antarctica, so this question could probably be phrased better.

Just to emphasize how poor my geography of the USA really is, l did not believe there was a state in continental US (besides Alaska) further north than Maine, but l thought Hawaii was further north. So l got the right answer through the wrong reasoning, ha.
