Surprised so few people knew Tambora - arguably a far more significant eruption than Krakatoa.

Well, I think that's because they made the movie "Krakatoa, East of Java" (even though it's west of Java) but no film about Tambora.

Me neither, but I remembered Krakatoa and not Tambora. It's probably because of the sound record it produced.

Great list. A lot that I knew, but a few I hadn't heard of (Mount Thor is awesome). I would have added Mount Fuji, Vinson Massif, and Mount Mitchell (highest U.S. peak east of the Mississippi--though I'm biased, being originally from North Carolina).
+1
Level 65
Apr 19, 2022
Yes I thought both Vinson and Mitchell were missing. Then again I am also a North Carolinian, but I still feel it is a significant enough peak to add to the list. Mount Washington, a smaller Appalachian peak, also appears, so I feel that it is justified as the largest in a major region.

The Temple Mount doesn't really exist as a hill anymore. It's a manmade stone platform. Could have put on Mount Scopus, Mount Zion, Mount of Olives, Cavalry Hill, Mount Moriah, if you wanted something from Jerusalem.
+3
Level 75
Feb 22, 2019
I think it's Calvary Hill or Mt. Calvary, not Cavalry, unless there is a place there dedicated to horse soldiers that I'm unaware of. :) I agree, any of those would be good substitutions.
+1
Level 82
Feb 24, 2019
yes, Calvary. I think that might have been auto-correct. Though I guess Calvary Hill doesn't really exist anymore, either. You can see a bit of it under glass inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Can someone explain how Chimborazo is the farthest from the center of the Earth when it's not the highest peak on Earth? Does it have to do with the thickness of plate tectonics? I am curious to know.
+4
Level 82
Feb 21, 2019
No it has to do with the fact that the Earth is not a perfect sphere. Chimborazo is in Ecuador sitting almost exactly on the equator.
+6
Level 76
Apr 19, 2022
To be specific, the Earth's spin makes it bulge a little at the equator, like how spinning pizza dough makes it flatten out. The Earth's radius at the equator is about 3963 miles (6378 km), while the radius at the poles is about 3950 miles (6357 km). This means that something at sea level on the equator is about 13 miles (21 km) further away from the center of the Earth than something at sea level at the poles.

Of course, the difference is less drastic the further away you are from the poles, but with Everest being about 5.5 (8.8 km) miles above sea level, the addition of even a couple more miles from the Earth's center makes a big difference. In fact, Mount Everest is the tenth furthest point from the Earth's center, beaten by Chimborazo by about 1.3 miles (2.1 km), even though Everest is about 1.6 miles (2.6 km) higher above sea level.

Mauna Kea not really. It's a valid measure to start from the bottom.

+1
Level 56
Apr 19, 2022
Yes, I agree, I've never understood the rationale for Mauna Kea
+5
Level 76
Apr 19, 2022
It's two different ways of measuring height: distance above sea level, and distance above the surrounding land. Think about it this way: Everest (and the rest of the Himalayas) were created by the collision of the Indian tectonic plate and the Eurasian plate, so they started growing from land at or above sea level. Mauna Kea, on the other hand, grew as a volcano from the ocean floor, so it had to do a lot more growing to get to its height.

I just always thought I was bad at spelling/remembering. I hadnt even heard of them before this site (so a year max) btw.

Missed the bottom 12 (besides temple mount, got that one), and Loa, Aconcagua Saint Helens and well, Matterhorn

Very fun and challenging quiz! Mahalo!

One suggestion:

1. According to the Old Testament, Mount Zion was where the temple in Jerusalem was built. (Isaiah 60:14)

2. Also according to the OT, Mount Moriah where Abraham put Isaac on the altar was where Solomon's temple was built. (2 Chronicles 3:1)

I tried both Mount Zion and Mount Moriah unsuccessfully, and then used the modern term Temple Mount.

Could you add Zion and Moriah?
