Born under the tensions of the Cold War, it still exists. Hm, even if the films aren't specially good - okay for sure, but nothing more as I can remember.

They were so cutting edge when they began in an era where special effects were not computerized.
+4
Level 88
Aug 24, 2021
Computerized effects really ruin these movies. That was most of the appeal - to see what the stuntmen could do. A computer generated cartoon can be as ridiculous as it wants. There's nothing to admire there, no creativity or daring on the part of those making the movie.

I could only remember one of the Pierce Brosnan movies. I thought the stunts and effects were great, but for some reason those movies were not that memorable for me. For Your Eyes Only was one of my favorites, in part because of the fantastic locations. I am surprised that it is the one people have the most trouble remembering.

Saw Spectre today because there was nothing else playing. Like most Bond films it was decidedly ho-hum.

Level 63

I think most Bond films are a lot of fun even if they're not great. You just hope they have memorable villains, cool action scenes, and beautiful locales and women. You're not going to see No Country for Old Men when you go to see a Bond film, but I think many are great, most are fun, and only a few are a bad time.

As for who is the best Bond, it is still Sean Connery because most of the other actors fit one of James Bond's main traits: to be a bad ass or to be charming, while he filled both roles. Moore and Brosnan were ultra charming but I didn't think any could actually win a fistfight (and that may be more due to the films than them, as if we can buy Liam Neeson kicking ass in Taken, then why not?), while I found Dalton and (to a lesser extent) Lazenby as less charming but believed they could win a fight or two. Craig has probably been the best mix since Connery, but I think he's about 65-35 in favor of bad ass where Connery is closer to 50-50.

That's just my take though!

Sean Connery was the best! He made it just the right amount of campy. The modern Bond movies are too serious given the ridiculous subject matter. Also just my opinion.

I rank them Connery, Moore, Brosnan, Craig, Dalton. I never saw George Lazenby's movie so I can't fairly rank him among the others. Connery was the original and still my favorite, though Moore is a close second. Pierce Brosnan was quite good as well, but he was basically just playing a slightly updated version of what Roger Moore was doing. Daniel Craig isn't doing a bad job per se, but his films don't have the proper James Bond feel (which is not all his fault), and he isn't suave enough for the role. Dalton just failed to excite me when I last watched one of his films, though admittedly it has been many years.

Sean Connery! - The best Bond EVER!!! Brosnan #2 others don't count. Spoiler: Did you know that the very first Bond, David Niven

served in the WWII army with Ian Fleming, the author of the Bond series. Also, did you know that they were spies for the OSS under Wild Bill Donovan?

+6
Level 84

David Niven wasn't the first Bond. That version of Casino Royale came out in 1967. There were a couple before Connery who played Bond on TV and radio though, plus the stuntman in the opening gun barrel sequence of Dr No if that counts.
+1
Level 71

There were other James Bonds prior to Doctor No, but not in the cinema. According to his Wikipedia page Bob Holness of Blockbusters fame was the second actor to portray James Bond, in a radio play, but American actor Barry Nelson was the first to play 007 in the 1954 TV special Casino Royale.

Interestingly Casino Royale was the original 007 book, however, the reader is well over a third of the way through the story before James Bond is mentioned at all, the first part of the book is about Vespa Lynd.

I recognized many names when it was over but saw and remembered very few. I don't like Bond at all. The only Bond movies I enjoyed were the unofficial films -- Never Say Never Again and Casino Royale (with David Niven). I've watched one of each actor thinking I might get on board with a different actor but I won't do it again with the next actor. It's not the actor but the character.

Sean Connery WAS Bond. I suspect many who don't mention Connery are probably younger, but you "had to have been there" when the Connery films first came out (esp. Dr. No, From Russia..., Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice) to really appreciate how those films exploded onto the big screen for the first time. Never forget it.

Daniel Craig is the second best bond after Sean Connery.

Wait, the second best after Connery, so there's one between them? That means he could still be the worst if the order was Dalton, Lazenby, Moore, Connery, Brosnan, Craig (which it obviously isn't). Or did you mean the overall second best, after Connery?
