Aden changed borders quite a lot over the years. This is just how it looked in 1921.

Oman: Let's not get to excited about our colonies. Let's just have the coast and land near Muscat.

What is the reason for the light gray spot in Turkey?
+6
Level 55

Zone of the Straits, a joint allied occupation zone that existed in the final years of the Ottoman Empire in and around Constantinople.

When you zoom in on some of the flags it displays the name if you would like I would gladly remove the text that gives away the answer but it's up to you. The one I spotted was 'Barbados' but I'm quite sure there are more

since the british are so bad at making flags

since some countries are not very original when it comes to making flags.

Barbados, Bahamas and Solomon Islands. Well, I personally wouldn't worry too much about it, considering there's quite a few harder answers here, lol.

Does anybody know why Malaysia was split into so many parts? I know I could Google it but I want a good JetPunk answer.
+1
Level 82
May 22, 2023
Probably separate sultanates that still exist and later joined to form Malaysia.
+6
Level 55

Malaysia was a bit more complicated back then. By 1921, most of Malaysia wasn't federated yet and a lot of the sultanates that today make up the country were administratively separate protectorates. While western modern-day Malaysia was unified by the end of World War II and gained independence in 1957 as Malaya, the eastern British holdings (British North Borneo and Sarawak) and Singapore (later expelled in 1965) would join Malaya in 1963 to form Malaysia. Brunei would remain British until 1984.

If I’m not mistaken, the Gold Coast was actually 3 separate colonies being “Gold Coast”, “Ashanti” and “Northern Territories”

Also the Crown Colony of Labuan was a small island possession just off of Borneo.

Great quiz, would love to see a French or other similiar versions.

Should Norfolk Island be included as a separate entity? I'm aware it was assigned to Australia in 1913.

Their status as external territory, like with Papua, does put both possessions in a strange position within the British Empire. I chose to include external territories for the sole fact so that it adds a bit more clarity.

What about Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau? If Australian possessions are on the list, why not NZ possessions?
+3
Level 55
Jun 10, 2023
It should be noted that these areas were administrated differently back in 1921.Tokelau was part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony. Niue and Cook Islands were under more less tighter control of New Zealand and not yet separate entities. Either way, West Samoa, which was a mandate subject to NZ-authority is included.

Norfolk and Papua were placed under Australian control as external territories pretty early on in contrast to that.

I enjoyed this quiz a lot. In my 50s, I am old enough that the maps and atlases of my childhood showed the "old" names of a lot of these possessions, and the old names were still in common use as people got used to the new names. So it was fun for me to remember the former names of Lesotho, Malawi, Vanuatu, and so on.
