How does Russia still manage to have a shrinking population with such a huge net influx of migrants? Also, where are they coming from that Russia looks like an attractive prospect right now?

- It's still a huge country, so to offset the low fertility rate it would need A LOT of immigrants

- I think mainly from Caucasus, Central Asia, China. There are many developed parts of Russia with lots of jobs, plus the first two are Russian speakers.

Not really, Georgia speaks Georgian, Armenia speaks Armenian, Azerbaijan speaks Azerbaijani, Kazakhstan speaks Kazakh, Uzbekistan speaks Uzbek, Kyrgyzstan speaks Kyrgyz, Tajikistan speaks Tajik and I'm not sure about Turkmenistan

All of those countries have their national language as an official first language, but thanks to the legacy of the Soviet Union they also have a high proportion of educated Russian speakers.

Right, of course their mother tongue is mostly something else (the most notable exception is Kazakhstan with a quarter of native Russian speakers), but a vast majority speak Russian as a second language, many with practically native level fluency. Foreign movies for example are shown only with Russian dubbing in many countries, no local subtitles or dubbing.

Things have changed the most in Georgia, where many young people don't speak Russian but they're much better in English.

My guess...

Ethnic Russians settled in many places during the Soviet era.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, they wanted to return to Russia rather than remain in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, etc...

I bet most of the Mexican immigrants are illegal immigrants and most of the Syrian immigrants are refugees.

Not all immigrants from Mexico are illegal, yes there are many who flee to America without actually waiting for asylum and stuff, but you underestimate how many are actually coming in legally. For instance, my aunt was being naturalized as an American citizen, more than half the people in that auditorium (other than the family of the immigrants) stood up when Mexico was called. that was only one group (of like 3000 people), but multiple happen in a day.

As someone from Colombia, I þink many of the illegal and legal migrants come from ðe rest of ðe Americas. Just lump in Venezuelan, Central American, Cuban and ðe rest of South America and you'll probably find many illegal migrants.

Also, many "illegal" migrants may just be people whose visa expired while ðey were in the states

*1.4 million Syrians. Jordan hosts more refugees than this, but many are Palestinian refugees who came after the Nakba.

My family emigrated because it kinda sucks there. Poor economy, poor infrastructure, lots of corruption. The U.S. is just an easier place to live in I guess.

Funny how so many people in the UK moan about migration and yet the UK's net immigration is considerably less than it's other European counterparts
+1
Level 27
Apr 18, 2024
Could be wrong but I think the UK has quite a high emigration rate, so while the net figure is low there is quite a substantial shift in demography which might give the impression of greater change.

The US always looks impressive on these quizzes due to its massive population for a western nation but relatively speaking, not that many people move there when compared to some other countries on the list. Sure, the current figure of 23.9 million is well above the next country on the list, but if you compare to Canada's 4.29 million, Canada has 3-4% more immigration per capita than the US.

If you know the recent history of Zimbabwe you'll know it's not a surprise at all. Being under a dictatorship for so long and astronomical inflation along with widespread corruption, it's surprising more people haven't fled.

confused by this source considering the 750,000 net migration rate in the uk in 2022 alone, and in at least the hundreds of thousands every year since 1998
