Kamala Harris was officially president of the U.S. during Biden's colonoscopy. Powers were transferred. I think that should count for the quiz, especially given the nature of the questions-- they all have a little bit of a trick to them.

None of these are trick questions. Kamala Harris was never President.

Kamala Harris has never been president is better phrasing. She is still around and may yet be president

QM's phrasing was absolutely fine. The statement was in the past tense, so like yours doesn't rule out the possibility that she may be president in the future.

pitzikiat's phrasing is slightly better, but I think that the difference is a little pedantic, even for this website.

I teach English. pitzikat's phrasing was not better. QM used the simple past. pitz used the present perfect. Both are correct and in this case convey the exact same idea. Saying, for example, that Ted Cruz was not revealed in 2021 to be a reanimated steam-powered corpse piloted by a drunken gerbil is accurate, but it also does not preclude him from being outed as such in 2022.

I assumed that the flea / kangaroo question meant that comparatively the flea jumps higher than a kangaroo. A flea can jump 200 times its own height whereas a kangaroo can make twice at a pinch.

Oh I didn't even know they can't fly, I thought them flying meant they jump higher by default and it was a trick question lol

Do we know for sure that bark isn't a berry? I mean bananas are berries but strawberries apparently aren't. Eggplants are berries. Watermelons are berries. Even pumpkins are berries!

I think we need a less controversial question, maybe one about Cyprus or Palestine.

LOL! Berries are controversial indeed. Culinary experts and biologists will argue and throw tomatoes at each other about berries until they are both blueberry in the mouth. Rather than just blow raspberries at each other, maybe we ought to just stick with the currant answer out of plum simplicity. ;)

If you roll 2 6-sided dice, you will get 2 random numbers, each from 1 to 6, so there are 36 possible pairs of numbers (ex: (1,1), (4,2), (3,6)). Some of these combinations give the same sum. For example, 4 can be rolled by rolling either (1,3), (2,2), or (3,1), so there is a 3/36 chance of rolling a 4 since 3 of the 36 possible pairs give you 4. 2 and 12 are the least likely to be rolled because there is only one way to make each of them ((1,1) and (6,6), respectively), while 7 is the most likely because it can be rolled 6 different ways ((1,6), (2,5), (3,4), (4,3), (5,2), (6,1)).

To be brief - you are 6x more likely to roll a 7 than to roll a 12.

...or to simply make the question "false" - only one roll gives you "2" (1+1), other numbers, like "7", have several combinations.

Level 53
Feb 6, 2022
Yes, can someone explain the dice one?
+2
Level 76
Feb 6, 2022
you would expect to roll a total of 2 or 12 about 1 time in 36, since there's only 1 combination in the 36 possible that make those totals (1+1 and 6+6 respectively). however, some totals are much more likely than that - you would expect a total of 7 about 1 time in 6, since there are way more combinations that sum to 7 (e.g. 1+6, 3+4, 5+2 and so on). this means when you roll two dice and take the sum you're much more likely to get 7 than 12. however, you're right to be confused as the question didn't include the crucial detail that you add together the two numbers shown on the dice - @Quizmaster, please fix this so the question reads something like 'If you roll two fair d6 dice, there is an equal chance the two values will sum to every number between 2 and 12.'

incidentally, the way many d6 dice are constructed, with divots taken out of the face to show the number, mean that actually they're not completely fair. the 6 face, with 6 little notches taken out of the face, is lighter than the 1 face, since it's only missing 1 piece. when you roll it, the heavier 1 face is therefore slightly more likely to fall faster and end up on the bottom, and you're slightly more likely to roll a 6. this means at the professional level of games like backgammon, players have to use specially designed dice with the number patterns marked on e.g. with paint, rather than physically scraped out from the surface of the dice.

I think people (including myself) were thinking the question meant a flea can jump higher compared to its size than a kangaroo, which is totally true. A flea can easily jump 30-50 times its own height, whereas if a kangaroo did that, it would be international news and no doubt become an enduring meme.

A kangaroo can jump about 2m high where as a flea can only jump about 0.3m high. The flea only jumps higher in relation to their body sizes.

My assumption was that kangaroos are built for jumping far, but not for jumping high. Most of the time they're staying fairly close to the ground. On the other hand, fleas can probably jump arbitrarily high under the right wind conditions.

For the one about Bible characters, including the "named" caveat in the full question rather than just the explanation would be helpful. Technically there are large masses mentioned (ex: feeding the 5000) and, assuming normal population distribution, that would even out the ratio considerably. I spent a bit pondering if this was a trick question during the quiz xd

Using the word "characters" for the bible question is a bit sus. Surely it's still more a historical document than a work of fiction, on net balance.
