I kept trying 'full fat' for the milk one- good quiz harder than I thought it would be

Half, Quarter could also be followed by Dime (US coins)

skim, 1%, 2%, whole?

In Canada its: Skim, 2%, Homo (short for homogenized)
+2
Level 77
Jan 22, 2016
That's just weird as "homogenized" means the fat particles have been broken down to small ones, so the fat disperses in the milk and doesn't float up. Even 2% milk has fat in it and is homogenized usually.

Homogenized was milk that didn't have the cream floating on top. It came before any of the lower fat milk. Back in the day we drank low fat milk because dad scooped the cream off the top for his coffee.

In the UK: skimmed, semi-skimmed, whole. Your audience isn't entirely American.

For "Once, Twice..." I totally tried "three times a lady". :D

Or "fee times a mady" if you're Buckwheat.

its alpha beta and omega.. not gamma

Level 89
Oct 22, 2014
No it's not. Alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon...Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet.

Level 64
Mar 27, 2016
Omega should be acceptable, alpha/beta/omega is sometimes used in ethology, especially in wolves to categorise animals into one of three social types (although actual wolf experts say the idea of an 'alpha wolf' in the wild is a myth).

I'm guessing it's because of the "bronze, silver, gold" question.

I STILL insist that you should accept Half, Quarter, Dime! It is just as legitimate a response as the given answer; it is the next in the series of US coins. Dollar, half, quarter, dime, nickel, penny.

Remarkably enough, not every human being is from America.
+8
Level 75
Mar 28, 2016
No, but allowances are usually made for regional differences once they are pointed out, just as QM now accepts homogenized as well as whole milk, after the Canadian comments. Adding dime as an answer is a reasonable request IMO. My only issue is that it was a demand rather than a request. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar, eric29.

Level 77
Mar 28, 2016
Well I certainly am not demanding anything, other than perhaps the courtesy of a reply to a reasonable request. I first suggested half, quarter, dime almost three years ago. Since this quiz has reappeared on the front page I thought I would try again. I am not saying that the current answer is wrong; it is obviously a correct response. I was just pointing out that to an American it is not the only correct response, and each time I have taken this quiz I always think of dime first, and only get eighth after dime doesn't work. Either way, dime is a reasonable and correct answer, is not obscure or ridiculous and is worthy of inclusion. That's all I am trying to say. If I am wrong I would like to know why; otherwise what would it hurt to add dime as an alternate answer? So Quizmaster, if my request reeked of vinegar I do apologize....and do please take my suggestion under consideration. Thank you!!

well you'd be hard put to tell that from the rest of the quiz

I am from the US and dime was not on my radar. I bet the majority of the people would not have thought of dime, but rather eighth.
+1
Level 82
Nov 27, 2022
Dime was my first guess... BUT no one in America calls a 50-cent coin simply "Half", it's always called a "Half Dollar". Dime would only be next if it was "Half dollar, quarter". In its current state, "dime" is wrong.

Where does the VP, VSOP pattern come from?

Cognac and other things where people want to indicate age and luxury. The XO stands for Extra Old.

I am incredibly proud of myself that I couldn't get the Star Sign question in the slightest. I tried to type in all the ones I could think of (which was only about 5 others) after which I gave up.

I suppose I can see an argument for being "proud" of not knowing astrology, as much as one can ever really be proud of ignorance, but I'm very curious what your argument is for being proud of not knowing astronomy.

No, I meant astronomy. I said that I can sort of understand them being proud of not knowing astrology, but I wondered why they would be proud of also not knowing astronomy. Not knowing the zodiacal constellations requires ignorance of both both.

The cognac grading is incorrect. The correct pattern is VS, VSOP, and Napoleon, XO comes after Napoleon. I missed the quiz because of that
