Grand Island, Nebraska? Why do I suspect that it is neither?
+7
Level 70
Jan 23, 2018
I've driven through it. It is neither. Google tells me that it was named for a nearby island in the Platte River, though the island no longer exists.

Apr 12, 2019
I was actually born there and lived there until I was 12. It was named after a fort which was named after a river in the Platte that doesn't exist anymore. It's certainly one of the less grand towns in Nebraska.

Cool quiz! Is there a European countries equivalent on this site?
+7
Level ∞
May 24, 2019
I would love to, but honestly it's just too hard. European countries have very strange population statistics often based on ancient city boundaries. For example, Brussels is only the 5th most populous municipality in Belgium. There would be no way to make a quiz that could possibly satisfy our users.
+2
Level 74
Sep 6, 2019
Because some of the answers would be un-intuitiv?

I mean, when it comes to countries, the population is counted as you describe it, with ancient boundaries and without taking the small countries around them in.

+1
Level 67
Aug 27, 2023
It is easy to miss those if you are not a fast typist. A full FIVE more minutes on this quiz would not be too much. I suspect that well more than 2 out 3 people that attempt this quiz can tell you the largest city in wisconsin, but not if they never get that far. Yes, with more time, a fast typist could just type in city after city, but that would still require him/her to actually know lots of cities, and it would give the slower typists time to finish the quiz.

I was just checking some of the stats and it seems that the fourth biggest city in New Hampshire is Derry not Dover; If you are going by the 2010 census, Derry had 33,109 inhabitants while Dover was just shy of 30,000. The 31,153 figure for Dover is fan estimate rom the 2016 census. Not picking apart, just thought I'd get some clarification. Cheers and thanks for the quiz :)

Kansas City, MO was founded in 1838 and incorporated in 1853 before Kansas was even a territory, much less a state. It was named for the Kansas river. Kansas City, KS was incorporated in the 1870s several miles away. They were two distinct cities from their beginnings, not just one city that was split by a border.

+2

Washington DC is technically not in any state. It's a separate district which is located in Maryland but not technically part of Maryland. That may not be the official definition but think of it that way.
+5
Level 82
Sep 1, 2019
It's not in Maryland but the small square parcel of land that was cut out for the district and given to the federal government took some land from Maryland and some land from Virginia on each side of the Potomac. Virginia took back its portion in 1847 so now it's a half square on the east bank of the Potomac River; land that used to be part of Maryland.

Vermont is correct if the definition is incorporated cities only. It is incorrect if the definition is incorporated places, which in Vermont/New England is only a distinction of town government form since cities and towns are also incorporated. In that case, Colchester would replace Essex Junction.

QM has been pretty steady with just going with cities, but I could see the rationale for using all incorporated places in New England.
