I really like this quiz, but I do have one question. What about Italy declaring war on Germany in 1943 after switching sides?
+8
Level 16
May 18, 2020
Technically Italy was fully occupied and the government was a puppet of the Allies, they were cobelligerent

Italy declared war to Germany in 1943 and in 1945 to Japan

It is a difficult subject, italy after 1943 was completely occupied. In the north, the Republic of Salò was a puppet state of the Nazis and in the south, the Allied cobelligerent Kingdom of the South. The continuity of the Italian State is not very clear in those periods.

Pretty good quiz, but there were a few mistakes. USSR does not work for the Soviet Union, and you missed some wars. I will make sure to nominate once these mistakes are fixed.

Only the south of Italy, which was a cobelligerant puppet state of the allies, in the north the republic of salò was formed which was a puppet of germany, the italian state was practically not existing

Except that the southern Italy was the only "Italy", with a king and a legitimate government.

So no, the Italian state existed and was recognised (even by Germany).

In 1866, Italy was on war with 14 sovereign states. Did Italy really declare war only on 2 of them?

2 things:

1) Italy never declared any war on Republican Spain in 1936. Officially, the Italians that fought against the legitimate Republican government, together with Franco's rebels, were "volunteers".

2) In 1943, the Kingdom of Italy declared war on Germany. And, technically speaking, it wasn't a "puppet state": it was the legitimate Italian government, ruled by the king. As a professor of Contemporary History at the university, I quite know this subject... ;-)

This is not an exhaustive list; there are quite a few formal declarations of war that are not included here. I also noticed that the date that Italy declared war on Greece is wrong. From what I can tell, Italy declared war on Greece on October 28, 1940.

As far as I can tell, Italy never declared war on:

-Liechtenstein

-Ethiopia

-Spain

-Albania

-USSR

-Greece

-Albania

If we want to talk about countries Italy has been at war with, then go ahead by all means. But that isn't what this quiz is.

Ok look I know that all of these are true so I'll give the easy ones

- Ethiopia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italo-Ethiopian_War_of_1887%E2%80%931889

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Italo-Ethiopian_War

Spain: Italy supported Spain's Fascist government in the Spanish Civil war, and warred the republican govt.

Albania: Shortly before WWII, Italy annexed Albania.

USSR: Italy declared war on the USSR around when Germany did I think

Greece: Italy's imperial ambitions lead them to invade Greece (And for like the millionth time in the war, they only won with Germany's help.)

Liechtenstein: Their army literally had 80 men. I don't know why they fought but they did.

Please do some research before posting comments.

Liechtenstein's army did no fighting and basically sat in the mountains smoking cigars and drinking wine. They entered the War of Third War of Italian Unification, which was part of the Austro-Prussian War. They entered the war with 80 men + 20 reserves in Vaduz. They (allegedly) ended the war with 81 men + 20 reserves in Vaduz. The additional man was either an Austrian liaison officer who decided that sitting in the Alps was better than fighting Prussians, or an Italian soldier who decided sitting in the Alps drinking wine was a better use of time than fighting Austrians over who would get to control Lombardy-Venetia.

How many of these were actual official declarations of war and how many of them just simple invasions? Italy for sure NEVER declared war on Spain in 1936 and it was the official Italian state that changed sides in 1943 and became an Allied co-belligerent.

Did Italy never bother to declare war on the other Commonwealth countries?

I know that Canada made its own declarations of war in WWII, unlike in WWI when its dominion status meant that they were automatically at war with anybody upon whom the UK declared war. I imagine it's a similar case for Australia and New Zealand. Were these declarations never reciprocated by Italy?

+1
Level 78
May 25, 2021
They might not have really cared. If one party declares war, it is not like the other party really has a choice in the matter. If a Canadian soldier started shooting at an Italian, the Italian wasn't going to not fire back just because his government never made an official war declaration. The Italians may also have seen the South Africans, Australians, Kiwis, Canadians, New Foundlanders, et. al as Brits who were a bit lost geographically.

Well no: Italy didn't declare war on Liechtenstein. The 1866 war declaration, which appeared on the Gazzetta ufficiale of 20 June 1866 reads «HM the King [...] feels compelled to declare war on the Austrian Empire». Liechtenstein is never mentioned in the declaration. The document can be found here: https://www.gazzettaufficiale.it/eli/gu/1866/06/20/169/sg/pdf
