"Hauts de France" must be the stupidest name for a region ever - for the flattest, lowest-lying part of France. Presumably those civil servants in Paris think stuff in the north is literally higher up than stuff in the south, or something

Hauts does not necessarily need to mean high as in mountainous it can also somewhat mean "North of."

when they reduced the number of regions they were probably a bit short of possible names that were different from the old ones! Shame the quiz is not complete and excludes the territories of Clipperton and French Southern and Antarctic Lands

Those are territories I believe, not collectivities.

"Hauts" refers to North in this context. The name was suggested by the regional counsil (with 2 other names) and was voted by the locals.

No civil servants from Paris were involved ;)

Regions and departments avoid "Nord" in France because it evokes cold and rain. So the Nord region became Hauts de France, Cotes du Nord is now Cotes d'Armor, etc.

Same since with Bas and Inferieure (both meaning lower but sounding inferior): Basses Pyrenees, Loire Inferieure, Basses Alpes, Seine Inferieure all changed their name to something zappier.
