Should accept Water Buffalo, that's what we called it in America when I was a kid. I tried it but moved on.

Well, by all means, if that's what you called it in America... (which America, by the way?)

"buffalo" by itself also works

You shouldn't. Water buffalo are native to Asia, and Cape buffalo native to Africa. They're not the same species.

False. Not the same species or genus:

The water buffalo is an asian domesticated bovine, it is totally different from the african "black death" buffalo.

How did leopard beat out tigers, hippos, antelopes, gazelles, wildebeests, gorillas, giraffes, zebra, cheetahs, etc?
+14
Level 45
Jul 19, 2013
The big five were chosen based on how difficult they are to hunt. You're a lot more likely to get killed attacking a leopard than attacking a gazelle.
+3
Level 69
Mar 10, 2016
Hippos are indeed large and also dangerous AF, but I assume are not classified as "game" because they're all varying degrees of endangered/vulnerable, and are thus not generally huntable.
+6
Level 76
Apr 20, 2016
Because rhino's aren't endangered???
+4
Level 68
Nov 19, 2020
Most of those are endangered, but the list dates from the 1900s, when that was even less of a concern than today!
+2
Level 52
Apr 20, 2016
The leopard is the hardest to hunt and definitely the least seen of the 'Big 5' so easily earns its place on the list. You could track them for months using normal tracking methods and not even catch a glimpse

Tigers are indeed even more difficult to hunt in Africa than leopards.

Geography does play a tiny role with that but let's not let details like that get in the way.
+4
Level 68
Nov 19, 2020
Yeah, the leopard is the only one I haven't seen in the wild, on a Kruger Park safari. They hunt at night, and spend a lot of the time hidden in trees. Cape buffalo and elephants, however, can't climb nearly as well.
+2
Level 78
Apr 7, 2021
That would need to be a very sturdy tree.
+3
Level 68
Apr 8, 2021
I suspect that lack of suitable trees is indeed the main problem!
+3
Level 58
Jan 26, 2022
Incorrect. You never see elephant hiding in trees only because they are so good at it.

Cheetahs are like smaller versions of leopards, tigers definitely shouldn't be there. They don't even live in Afrca

Never knew they were "of Journalism". Anyway, the five biggest Mediterranean islands; as far as I know, they are in no actual particular grouping. Isn't this supposed to be actual "groups of five", rather than five particular members of a group?

Well, I think "the five largest ..." are as well defined a group as the sports in the modern pentathlon for the purposes of this quiz. But I agree about the W's — I had no idea what that meant.

+1
Level 66

They're mostly not, but they're still called that - for example the bank notes in SA feature them.

Apparently the Buffalo were the most dangerous of the 5 to hunt. If you miss, they always charge and shooting one while it's running at you is... challenging. And not just because their heads are basically armour plated.

Add tree as a fill in for wood - The actual chinese character for the element is 木 which means tree as well as wood.

Can you accept "rock" or "stone" as a fill in for earth? Obviously they don't mean the planet Earth, so any synonym for the ground that which we stand on should be acceptable, right?

Curious if you come from a rocky place, because rock is one of the last things I think of when thinking of the ground. All dirt around me.
