I guessed Northern Confederation maybe it could become a type in?

It should, or at least some other terms. Not Prussia! Or Germany, for that matter. These are not the same. But "North German" or "Northern German" would be a tolerant approach to the right answer. I tried "North Germany", "North Germany Alliance" and "North German Confederacy" since I didn't know the English word. Now if someone could explain the difference between a confederacy and a confederation...

Clearly you didn't, considering "North German" is literally an accepted type-in.

I added Prussia as a type-in.

The "North German Confederation" was a de-facto state that only existed between 1867–1871.

Now that this quiz has been featured via nominations, it feels not suitable to require such an exact type-in.

What's up with the color scheme for Romania and Serbia? They appeared a shade of green so I figured I didn't have to guess them.

This is mentioned in the caveat, but I'll explain anyway: They were nominally part of the Ottoman Empire at the time, however de facto independent as the Ottomans basically no longer had any control over them.

Maybe you should use a different color scheme because though I read the caveat, I didn't know that that plot of land hadn't been guessed since it it was a shade of green.

I don't know, just my thought. Or just don't turn it any shade of green until it's been guessed? Either way, nice quiz

I would like to second this. Could you mention in the caveat that those are marked as light green or change the color scheme?

27/29 first attempt. Nominated! However, one of the countries I missed was the North German Confederation. I get that it might've been completely different from all of the later German nations, but I find it reasonable to accept "Germany".

"North German" is already accepted. This state wasn't a fully unified German state and I think adding "Germany" as a type-in would ruin the point of the challenge.

I got 28/29 on my first attempt. I guessed Holy See and Vatican City but only Papal States is accepted apparently

Well because that country was not called "Vatican City" or "Holy See" yet. The term Vatican began to be used after the Lateran Treaty (1929) that legally set the Papal state as confined to the Vatican Hill (and thus the name Vatican City).

(Or de facto since the Papal state has become 'Prisoner in the Vatican' since Italy conquered Rome)

Before this conquest, the Papal state was not equated as the "holy see" (which is a term for the role of the Pope) yet.

The Württemberg-Bavaria border looks wrong to me for some reason, it looks squiggly compared to the maps I see online.

It's wild that this hasn't been featured yet. It's probably because of Wurttemberg... What the heck is a Wurttemberg anyway?

Württemberg was one of the many German monarchies that survived throughout the ages of the Holy Roman Empire (albeit partitioned quite a bit throughout the years), into the Napoleonic era and then through the final years before German unification. Not too long after this, in the very beginning of 1871 during the Franco-Prussian War, it would join the North German Confederation along with Bavaria, Baden and Hesse to form the German Empire, the first modern unified German nation state.

Today, it exists merged together with Baden as the subdivision of 'Baden-Württemberg'.

there was city state not on the map on that time. Neutral Moresnet (1816-1920)

Moresnet was unfortunately not an independent state. It was a neutral condominium under Belgium (Netherlands before 1830) and Prussia.

The flag of "papal states" is incorrect. As the current flag shown under papal states is the flag of the vatican. Meanwhile the "papal states" flag is slightly different.

Level 55

Technically it is wrong, yes. It was the merchant ensign for the Papacy, but at the time this quiz was originally created it was incorrectly shown and listed as the national flag of the Papal States from 1825 to 1870 in a lot sources. It should be replaced with the de facto civil flag with the next update.
