Nice quiz. Adding Russian areas with separatist movements too (e.g. Chechnya, Dagestan etc) might make for an even more interesting quiz.

I originally considered adding autonomous Russian republics, such as Chechnya and Dagestan, but that would also likely mean adding other autonomous states with similar status in Georgia and Azerbaijan, and I feel like a quiz of the sort may be too obscure.

Ah, I thought places like South Ossetia/Abkhazia had a similar status to the autonomous Russian republics. I'll admit, I don't know much about these places.

the only thing special about nakhchivan is its exclave status. It has an autonomous government, but it's still fully under Azeri administration. Sorta like Greenland

South Osetia and Abkhazia are independent de facto.

Chechya is a part of Russia de-jure and de facto.

So keep your dreams.

Artsakh is the official name for Nagorno-Karabakh and the name I use most often when referring to it, so you should accept it.

Good. I can never remember the term Nagorno-Karabakh correctly. I keep thinking Ngorongoro Crater Astrakhan is easier. Too bad that's a city in Russia though.

One thing - Jetpunk has justified excluding Palestine from the Countries of the World quiz on the single basis that it does not have "control over its borders". So shouldn't Georgia also be excluded? Its loss of control over South Ossetia and Abkhazia is so formalised that these Russian-controlled areas have names.

Level 63

If we would do that then not only would Georgia not be included, but Azerbaijan, Somalia, and Morocco wouldn't be included either.

And India, China, Pakistan, Ukraine, etc... All the countries mentioned, except for Palestine, have control over their borders. They just don't control 100% of the territories they claim.

It is under control of Russia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia are not under control of Georgia.
+4
Level 36

You shouldn't exclude Abkhazia and "South Ossetia" from Georgia because they are officially unrecognized regions, just under Russian occupation, The whole world claims them to be within Georgian borders and in reality they ARE Georgia.

On the other hand, if you added northern Caucasian republics, that are parts of Russia (Chechnia,Dagestan,Ingushetia, etc) The quiz would become much more interesting.

(I'm from Caucasus and I know the region quite well)

The reality of any situation is more valuable than lines drawn on a map. I would love to make a version with the Russian republics, I'll try and make it soon as I can :)
+2
Level 66

But Georgia does not control it. The regions are self controlled so theoretically they are independent states. Even practically they are just not recognized by most countries because it was Russia that 'liberated' them and not a the USA.

Not currently, although the majority of people there are Christian Armenians, and from what I've heard there is no hard border between Artsakh and Armenia. I hope for peace in Artsakh, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
+3
Level 65

There actually is a hard border between Armenia and Artsakh Republic, its called the Lachin Corridor, which also has Armenian population.

Artsakh is armenian because it has freed itself from Azerbaijan in 1991 by an unanimous referendum.

PS: Armenia want´s peace, AZ wants war (they restarted the war by a spontaneous and ferocious attack on September 27th of this year.)

Level 70

I do not know which map shows the current controlled territory of Artsakh, although I've seen Russian provided streetview which shows no visible border controls between Armenia and Artsakh (the Artsakh streetview has since been removed, however). I don't want to take the sides of either Armenia nor Azerbaijan, for both countries have a kind and generous people, many of whom whom have been wronged by the other side and turned into refugees. Both sides have committed massacres in recent history and both sides have destroyed priceless cultural heritage. Therefore, I hope for only peace and nothing more without favouring any particular side.

Thank you! South Ossetia and Abkhazia are politically frozen zones which exist as a result of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Both have seen wars since 1991 and both are home to ethnic minorities other than Georgians. Both have some degree of Russian influence and South Ossetia has just beginning a process to become a part of Russia so its days on this quiz may be numbered.

I hope this is helpful :)

The Caucasus mountains are home to a variety of different groups. You can look at an ethno-linguistic map of the region and see a lot of diversity, especially on the Russian side.

Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh should still be a part of this quiz. The dissolution has been reverted and the government still exists.

See for example: https://www.france24.com/en/asia-pacific/20231222-nagorno-karabakh-dissolution-not-valid-says-armenian-separatist-leader

+2
Level 70
Jan 18, 2024
The existence of a separatist movement does not mean the unrecognised-state still exists. The territory of Artsakh has entirely capitulated to Azerbaijan, and the complete depopulation of the territory makes its reinstatement very unlikely. The leader signed the dissolution agreement, and then after a few months went back and claimed it was just a piece of paper and had no validity.

+2

The title was meant to be an allusion to unrecognised-states, since Abkhazia and South Ossetia are drilled into our heads as 'non-countries', for those who spend time enough time on Jetpunk.
