Nice quiz! You may want to specify you are after countries with the highest summits, not the highest average height.

Um? is this measured from the sea or from the center of the earth? if from the center of the earth, Colombia should be on there.

Colombia is ranked 6th for South America, with a highest point being 18,701 ft. (5,700 m).

This is obviously from sea level, the standard way to measure elevations. Distance from the center of the earth is an interesting curiosity, but it's almost never used for altitude measurements.

Getting into the details of this is fun. For instance, the eastern Mediterranean's water surface is lower than that of the western part because it's hotter there - more evaporation. And the center of the Earth is no better reference since the Earth is actually not a perfect sphere, and not even a perfect ellipsoid that bulges in the middle...

Lumi, there are technologies to make extremely round spheres. The roundest object in the world is so round that if it were the size of the Earth, the elevation difference would be about 14 meters apart. In case you're wondering, it cost millions of dollars. Maybe you can find the exact price on the internet.

If from the center of the earth, I think Ecuador would come out on top due to both being in the Andes and the equatorial bulge.

Yes... That's why I find it odd that so many people attempt (and die) climbing Mount Everest, when to get to the actual 'top of the world' (rather than the top of some arbitrary measurement devised by humans), you could climb Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador, which is also much easier to negotiate! Definitely on my bucket list!

What do you mean, centre of the Earth?
+6
Level 66
Mar 23, 2020
he means that thing that is in the center of our Earth... :D

sorry, couldn't help it, now seriously - because of the Earth's rotation, Earth is not a globe, but Geoid, making places around equator further away from the center of the Earth than those fx. on the poles. Add elevation to that, and Andes around equator are further away from Earth's center than Aconcagua.

Just a suggestion: since Nepal is known as the home of Mount Everest, perhaps it should be atop the Asian list? Placing China there while having questions about Nepal being the country with the highest elevation on other quizzes seems somewhat incongruous.

Eiter the actual peak is in China, as people are saying, or the peak is at the border and then China takes alphabetical priority. Either way, China should be listed first.

Not even Italy is claiming that. The dispute is between the French claim that the summit is entirely French, and the Italian claim that the border is exactly at the summit, which means that it is shared.

For those who are interested: in one of the most ridiculous territorial disputes ever, whether or not the summit of Mont Blanc / Monte Bianco belongs entirely to France (French claim) or is shared between France and Italy (Italian claim) is actually still not settled. I see that jetpunk sides with Italy. You will pay for this ! ;-)
