Did anyone else have technical troubles with this quiz? I don't know if it was the quiz, the site, or my browser/phone, but a lot went all Dalí for me...
@bogumilowy Actually, Wikipedia is a good source. It's a myth (and a far too common one) that people go around changing stuff for the hell of it. I think you need to re-read cornflakesfu's comment. The article agrees with you that Italy was a Central Power, it just didn't engage in real warfare. You're right that the quiz is a little messed up, as it should say, "Countries that fought for the Central Powers", not "one of the Central Powers".
@bogumilowy No, Italy was part of the Triple Alliance, prior to WWI. They refused to join, citing that it was a defensive alliance and this was an offensive war. Italy later joined the Allies, after being promised land from Austria-Hungary.
The pre-war alliances were the Triple Entente: consisting of France; Russia; and the UK. The other was the Triple Alliance: consisting of Germany; Austria-Hungary; and Italy. The war alliances were the Allies, consisting of: the UK; France; Russia; Romania; Italy; Serbia; Montenegro; Greece; Japan; China; and the USA. The Central Powers were: Germany; Austria-Hungary: the Ottomans; and Bulgaria.

I don't think that's correct. I believe 'Central Powers' refers to the countries that *fought* against the Entente in WWI, not to any formal alliance. So only belligerents count, not countries (like Italy) who were allied to one or more Central power at one point or another.
Love it. Not enough humility on this site (I hate those posts that go "All right and in 0.23 seconds" Bratish!) but this I like Shade. Hats off to you. Good quiz, thanks Wolfy
Because some people might Portugal first and click on it because it's technically right. Why not just substitute out for an answer that is definitely wrong?
precisely !! I was about to type that. (and then look it up trying to see if there is some way, some details that will fix it in the right place in my mind.)
I think I have a way to memorize now. Parthenon is in athena/for athens. and -arthen- sounds/looks more like athens than -anthe- (both words without the p).
(Plus pantheon is for all (pan) the gods (theon) and parthenon (virgin) is for athena)
Funnily, both Australia and Austria derive their names from a cardinal direction - but not from the same one. "Australis" (latin) means "southern", while the "aust" from "Austria" ist the same word as "east".
Surpised the Summer Olympics question success rate was so low. Makes me wonder if the majority went for Portugal because its the only "summer" country.
I got this catastrophically wrong by picking Serbia. For some reason I thought Sarajevo 1984 was a summer olympics rather than a Winter Olympics. My second big error was forgetting that Sarajevo is in Bosnia and not Serbia 🤦♀️ Didn’t even think of the Portugal summer ‘logic’!
Damn it! I got everything right except the question about Italy and WW1, I thought since they were a part of the Triple Alliance they would also be a part of the Central Powers but it appears they decided to stay neutral :(
I thought Bulgaria being a Central Power was somewhat obvious, since it can't be Russia since they were Allied, Italy only allied with Germany under Mussolini for WW2, and Spain I'm pretty sure just remained neutral for WW1
Why is almost every quiz on this website Geography?? (sigh), I've always thought I'm OKAY at Geography, until I see my scores on this site compared to others.
I had put Albania for the former Yugoslavia one until I saw that Albania was the answer for the following question... Thanks for rescuing me on that one!
"Despite having nominally joined the Triple Alliance before, Italy did not take part in World War I on the side of the Central Powers"
Any counterarguments?
Do not believe everything You find on the Wikipedia! The fact is, Italy belonged to the central powers untill they changed the side.

You're wrong, just wrong

Luckily, the Helsinki Olympics are rather memorable in my country, Czechia, since they are the place of Emil Zátopek's triumph in running.
