Love how Loving is more guessed than Hidalgo (McAllen), Webb, Potter, Ector or McLennan just because it is well known as the least populated county in all US (though I think it's no longer true) lol. The reason for Pecos being guessed by half the quiz takers is beyond me though.

Counties named for rivers, Colorado, Red River, Sabine, Pecos, Blanco, Frio, Brazos, LLano, Brazoria, Trinity, San Jacinto, Guadeloupe, Comal... Everyone does things by different groupings, but I'm probably not the only one using this one...

Here’s some history, Texas was originally controlled by the Spanish. When Mexico became independent, Texas was a part of Mexico. Eventually, Texas became furious. It hated being part of Mexico. Eventually, Texas rebels really took a punch and caused a war. There were many wars before but this was the final. This battle was called “The battle of San Jacinto”. Davy Crockett and many others fought. This battle made Texas the Republic of Texas. That is how the river was named (and the county)

Kalawao County, Hawaii is the least populous. Loving is number two, but Kalawao isn't really a proper county, it is governed by Maui County and is home only to people with Hansen's disease, who were quarantined there before antibiotics were developed that could stop patients from being contagious.

Texas has awesome city names. I like the ones with one syllable best. I would hate to live in a city with four or five syllables because I would waste a few weeks of my life just telling people where I was from.

I've lived in Texas my whole life (well, 9 years in California), I've lived in several cities, I've traveled, I've done genealogy research on my Texas ancestors who go back to pre-1836. And still I got only 60 correct, and that included a lot of wild guessing. (Let's enter some common last names! What about rivers? What about colors? Plants?)

I'm most unhappy about missing Harris County. I was going through the alphabet trying to remember it, and when I got to H my brain perked up—but I calmed it down again by telling it it was only excited because of the H in Houston.

I'm not sure I'm up for mastering this one!

Well that's a giggle, because as a New Zealander I only knew one of them, but I guessed enough random possibles (Washington, Smith, Brown etc) to earn a point anyway! The only one I remembered was Loving County, which I made a point of driving through once because it's the least populous county in the country. It sure was empty of people.

+3
Level 63
Aug 4, 2021
In most states it's basically a political subdivision between that of a state and a municipality.

For example (from greatest to smallest)

Texas -> Bexar County -> San Antonio

It can be tricky though as some states do have instances of counties and municipalities having the same boundaries and essentially being the same entity, i.e., San Francisco. Making it more confusing is that sometimes a city will have the same name of the county in which it resides, but that county will comprise much more than just that city, i.e., Los Angeles County.

+1
Level 57
Jul 14, 2022
Another thing making it even more confusing is that sometimes cities are spread over multiple counties — like Dallas has parts in 4 counties
