Never knew Otis Redding died in a plane crash.

I think it was just before Sitting On the Dock of the Bay was released too. It was a posthumous #1.
+7
Level 37
Mar 7, 2014
I probably would have gotten it if "Dock of the Bay" was listed as the song.
+4
Level 76
Jan 13, 2015
It was, Redding didn't like the song so he never released it. The famous whistled verse was written because he couldn't be bothered to write lyrics to the verse. He never saw any of the money it raised, despite being (probably) his most successful song.

IMO, it's at least his most beautiful one. It also was the song played to my marriage
+3

I wonder if the song would have been as popular if he hadn't died.
+6
Level 75

I'm another who would have gotten it if the clue had been Dock of the Bay. The song had a unique mood and feel, and it's sad he didn't enjoy the profits. I think Aretha is better known for Respect.
+3
Level 72
Apr 24, 2017
I wouldn't call it crappy. I recently learned that he wrote "respect" because I've been playing dock of the bay lately and decided to learn more about the artist. I was happy when I saw respect there because I immediately knew the answer. challenging, yes. crappy, no

I was really shocked to see that Aaliyah wasn't on this list. Either way good (however sad) quiz!
+6
Level 89

I am too. Aaliyah and Lisa Lopes were both very well known. Keith Moon and John Bonham were giants as well. Randy Rhoads, the non-drinking, no drugging mama's boy who skyrocketed Ozzy Osbourne's career in the short 2 years he had in the spotlight.

I know you don't want to clutter up a good quiz with obscure information, but for anyone interested, here are some classical composers and jazz artists who died young:

Franz Schubert (age 31)

Felix Mendelssohn (38)

George Bizet (36)

Charlie Christian (25)

Clifford Brown (25)

Jaco Pastorius (35)

Bix Beiderbecke (28)

Charlie Parker (34)

Level 73

Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Mozart died young from our perspective, but Vienna and Germany were positively filthy places at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and their life expectancy was a lot lower- at times down to the upper 30s.
+30
Level 73
May 22, 2014
Life expectancy rates are based on averages, so the high infant mortality rate would have skewed the statistics. Generally someone surviving early childhood pre the industrial revolution could be expected to live into their 50s
+7
Level 77

Grantdon is correct. The upper class, or people who entertained the upper class, generally lived much longer than the average life expectancy.

While I generally disagree with spouting off all the names that a quiz SHOULD have included (as long as the clues line up, it doesn't matter), I would suggest for completeness' sake that Brian Jones, the only generally-accepted member of the "27 Club" that you're missing, should be included.

There's a whole freaky conspiracy theory that if you map where all the musicians died in plane crashes, it creates the shape of a guitar over Wisconsin and Iowa, and that same area had Native Americans who made effigy mounds in the shape of lizards and resemble guitars. And people believe there's some kind of supernatural cause, so musicians better be wary. Of course, there are a lot of famous musicians from Wisconsin and Iowa who fly all the time without being sucked in by the Guitar Ghost beam of death.

Robert Johnson - who sold his soul to the devil in exchange for being a blues master - died at 27 in Mississippi.

1. "Biggie Smalls" = "The Notorious B.I.G.": his real name was Christopher Wallace. Should be an alternate answer.

2. "Big Bopper": his real name was Jiles P. Richardson. Should be an alternate answer.

3. Sid Vicious joined the Sex Pistols in 1977. The song "Anarchy in the U.K." was released in 1976. The clue does not connect.
