That's a state, and the majority population of KC is in Missouri, not Kansas.

Granted, I've never been there, but I've never heard Kansas City called simply "Kansas." If it were commonly called "Kansas" a lot, then I would agree with you. But I doubt this is the case.

Nope. My grandparents were from there, so I've been going there all my life. The only people who say "Kansas," thinking it can be abbreviated like "New York," are the uninitiated.

While I'm happy that the site finally started accepting Kuwait, Guatemala, and Panama along with New York without the "city" at the end, in this case, nah.. definitely Kansas City. Nobody ever says just "Kansas" unless they are talking about the state. Same with Oklahoma City. And as was pointed out, there are at least two Kansas Citys in the USA, and one of them isn't even in Kansas, so..

New York is not abbreviated

I do think it's a tad strange that typing "Kuwait" gets you 'Kuwait city' but to get 'Kansas city' you need to include the "city". I missed Kansas becuase I already had Kuwait and it was accepted without the need to type the "city" part, hence I didn't try it when Kansas wasn't accepted for 'Kansas city' I just assumed there was another city starting with a K that I hadn't though of.

I understand, that Kansas City isn't just referred to as Kansas' my point is more on the discrepancy between one answer requiring the full name and the other not.

^ I understand your point Algernon, but disagree. Kuwait City is not the "full name" of Kuwait City... it's just a colloquial nickname for Al Kuwayt that is used by English-speakers to differentiate the city and country. But, colloquialisms aside, the full name of the city is, in fact, Kuwait.

When my son lived in Kansas City, the only reason he ever went to the Kansas side was to get Oklahoma Joe's barbecue.

+7
Level 93
Feb 13, 2019
They should be here. Possibly the source lists them in the Osaka area which has a higher population, but they are in the Kansai region (including many other cities) and Kyoto, Kobe and Osaka together are in the Keihanshin urban area of 19M (with Osaka's urban area of 12M) so you would think one of those K-words would appear here. Kyoto and Kobe individually have urban areas more than the lowest on the list.

Google and Wikipedia have Kitakyushu having a population of around 1 million with Kyoto being around 1.5

Kitakyushu is invalid here. It only has a population over 2 milion when counted as a metro together with Fukuoka, but it's Fukuoka that's a main city in that metro. Kobe, Kyoto and Kawasaki are all mire populous on their own, and also are parts of bigger metros.
