spent most of my time trying to figure out what "I" city in Europe could possibly be bigger than London.... of course I didn't get it because I don't even usually think of Turkey as part of Europe. But I still scored in the 70th percentile even with all that wasted time...
I know that I'm being somewhat inconsistent here. However, the majority of the population of Istanbul is in Europe, so that's why I count it. I also left an explanatory note and put it in bold. I will be changing the "Biggest Cities in Europe" quiz to reflect this as well.
Ya!!! Thanks Quizzy, I've been arguing this one for ages. As you say, most of the city is in Europe. Even just counting the European side, its still the largest I. Great quiz BTW. Also, can you please add St Petersburg as an acceptable answer?
With around 4.4 million living in Asian side, maybe worth subtracting that from the given Istanbul population to get the true European population there? Here's the corresponding quiz for Asian cities.
Just Google "Xanthi." First result is a city, second and third too. To be honest, I haven't found any island of that name. I only spent couple of seconds looking, so I'm not saying there isn't an island of the same name, but the city is most definitely more prevalent.
Couldn't think of Kiev at all. Then thought "Kiel", not even sure if it's a city or just a channel, but mistyped that as Kiev. Took a minute to realise even :)
Well, this place is a very very bad word in English. Just saying. (Had to go visit there when I was in the area, like I'm sure a million tittering English-speakers have done before)
I believe that your last number for Naples is the urban area. The metropolitan area does have around 4,400,000 people according to Wikipedia. But for Rome the (metropolitan CITY) number is said to be 4,333,689.
I suggest you specify what you mean by 'straddle Europe and Asia' (i.e. the Ural mountains) , otherwise I expect many of us think of Istanbul rather than Ufa...Great quiz, by the way, thanks.
While Ufa is definitely in Europe (it is west of both main ridge of the Urals and of the Ural river), Yekaterinburg is as definitely in Asia. So while your suggestions are all out, Yekaterinburg should also be substituted with something else (don't know what exactly, though).
Agree. The border between European and Asian parts of Russia runs along Bashkortostan and Perm provinces along the Urals. That is commonly accepted. So Ufa is in Europe (barely) but Yekaterinburg is NOT (also barely).
I only tried Quimper as a joke! :D I remembered the city because my friend once went on holiday there and we used to make fun of the name.^^ Never actually thought that it might be the biggest "Q" city in Europe...
Edit: nvm, I found it another way ;)
If you consider the municipality population:
Rome: 2,869,461 vs Naples: 990,000 (2014 estimate)
If you consider the metropolitan population:
Rome: 4,321,244 vs Naples: 3,128,000 (2014 estimate)
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
