So 395 represents the extent of Roman territory on the death of Emperor Theodosius, and the subsequent splitting of the empire into Eastern and Western parts.

534 shows Bellisarius on campaign in North Africa, followed by the re-capture of the Italian mainland a couple of years later.

By the end of the 7th Century all of their African and Levantine territories had been lost to the expanding Caliphate, leaving the remaining Italian cities to be captured by the Lombards.

So what does the blue font indicate? Apart from Athens, these cities are all in Anatolia, is it something to do with being conquered by the Ottomans?

Good quiz anyway…

There is no blue font. That was your mobile browser thinking those dates were a phone number.

I've now added spaces so that your browser won't do that.
