Something interesting I've learned from this quiz and quizzes like this that I've made is that people tend not to think of West Virginia as close to the Great Lakes, even though it is only approximately 1 Ohio away.

Nice use of an Ohio as a unit of measure! And nice quiz!

Thank you! For those curious, 1 Ohio is about 200 miles, or roughly 325 kilometers, I expect that this will be recognized as an official unit of measurement in the next year or so. The way one would use it in a sentence is as follows, "Mom, how far are we driving today?" "We will be going about 2 and a half Ohios today." As you can see, this will be a revolution in measurement, a household unit of measure that will be in common use for centuries to come.

From the closest point near East Liverpool it's even only 80 miles from the West Virginia border to Lake Erie

Perpetually inventing yeehaw bald-eagly apple-piey units of measurement, Americans will definetly find any excuse for not using the metric system.

I spent far too long thinking of that silly joke.

As someone who lives in central Illinois, i know that it is exactly 200 miles to Indianapolis, which is about a 4 hour drive with kids. So while i don't measure distances in "Ohios" i certainly measure them in "Indianapolises."

I grew up in Illinois and live in Pittsburgh now, so I am very familiar with the unit Ohio. Its about 2 Ohios to get to Chicago and 2 1/2 to get to St Louis.

What am I dumb or just missing something? I live in a southwestern Cleveland suburb about 12 miles from Lake Erie and 120 miles drive south to Columbus Ohio, which is NOT 88 miles from Lake Erie.

Columbus to Cedar Point is a shorter drive than Columbus to Cleveland (distancewise at least).

From the furthest north portion of Columbus to Berlin Township (about halfway between Huron and Ruggles Beach) is 88.26 miles. Basically it is just north of where SR 61 ends at US 6.

SR 61 ... that's literally within 3 miles of my quaint little hometown of Willard ... small world when I see this pop up in JetPunk comments.

It had never occurred to me that there were no state capitals closer to the Great Lakes than that. Interesting.

I think in part its because many midwestern states chose their capitals to be more in the center of their state rather than just being a big city in their state.

A lot of these states were created when they were relatively sparsely populated, so a central medium-size city was normally chosen.

Vermont does not touch any great lakes! You were reaching with that one. 265 miles is not close enough even for government work. The Great Lakes are in the midwest and Vermont is in New England!

I never said Vermont did touch the Great Lakes, and if I had to stop the quiz before Montpelier, the quiz would only have 7 answers, which is a bit short for a Jetpunk quiz.

Also, where did you get 265 miles, Montpelier is only 173 miles away from the shores of Lake Ontario?

Should there be an entry shown for Lansing also being close to Lake Erie, about 170 miles?
