True, but I haven't EVER heard them referred to as "Clark & Lewis!" With good reasons: from their military days, Lewis was the higher ranking: Lewis was a Captain, and Clark a Lieutenant. Also, Lewis was recruited by Jefferson to lead the Corps of Discovery, and he asked to bring on his friend, Clark, as his right-hand man.
Fun fact: my Grade 4 musical was about Lewis and Clark and in the main song, whenever people sing "Lewis and Clark", Clark always chimes in saying "Clark and Lewis"
Did awful on this one. Was it really established that the Simpsons live in Oregon? I thought the whole point of putting them in "Springfield" was that they could be basically anywhere. I remember a couple scenes that seemed to make a point of that.
Yeah, Springfield is canonically not located in any particular state. It is named after Springfield, Oregon, and it is based in part on Portland, but the show has consistently made jokes about its location being undetermined.
Agreed, In "The Simpsons," Springfield was a fictional city, and was not in any specific US state. Creator Matt Groening was from Oregon, and revealed that the Springfield in the Simpsons was named after Springfield, Oregon, but he did not say it was supposed to be Springfield, Oregon.
Matt Groening is from Portland, and he named the town after the town next door -- Springfield, Oregon. He was partly inspired to do so because the 50s sitcom "Father Knows Best" was set in a place called Springfield. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2127965/The-Simpsons-Real-location-Springfield-revealed-creator-Matt-Groening.html
I should also mention that the Simpsons' nuclear power plant is strikingly similar to the Trojan nuclear power plant in Rainier, Orgeon, which was demolished in 2006. Photos and details here: http://laughingsquid.com/trojan-nuclear-power-plant-demolition/#comment-7418
I had the same thought. So the clue could more accurately say "Simpson's hometown that was named after this Oregon town" or something similarly clunky and awkward.
Exactly. It absolutely has NEVER been established what state they live in. In fact, in the Family Guy crossover episode when they come to the sign at the city edge Brian and Stewie have an exchange where they are about to refer to the state and Brian says, "I can't imagine we're allowed to say."
Might as well pile on. Matt Groening is from Oregon, but in the show, it is absolutely never established which state Springfield is in. The clue is (I assume deliberately) incorrect. "Based on" or "named after" would be fine. Saying that Simpsons live in Springfield, Oregon is as wrong as saying that the Bible says there were exactly three wisemen... another error Quizmaster refuses to correct.
Matt Groening said it was in Oregon. My brother-in-law lives there and I took my kid to 'downtown' Springfield. Now, you would think after Groening said that of course it was the town just down the road from where he grew up they'd make a big deal of it. Nope. There's a mural, a plaque that Groening signed saying 'To the people of the real Springfield, Matt Groening' or something like that, and that is it. There were some statues you might see online if you look. We couldn't see them, then driving back to Central Oregon, we pulled over for pizza at Ike's in Leaburg, there they all were. Biggest Simpsons museum in the world. Or it was. I have an awful feeling it's gone. The whole of Leaburg was just destroyed, it's just whether they got it all out. The owners were lovely, let my son - who unwittingly walked in with a Simpsons t-shirt on -sign their wall.
If you grew up in Portland, you hear about it all the time. I went to the same schools as Matt Groening, although years later. It was even rumored that my journalism teacher was the inspiration for Mr. Burns, which is pretty believable. Plus the names Flanders, Quimby, and Lovejoy are all streets in NW Portland.
It's not confirmed, it's just been theorized to be the setting based on the fact that it's where Matt Groening's from, and there are a couple of other small clues from the earlier seasons that help give the theory credence.
Astoria threw me off, a lot of the Goonies was filmed in Cannon Beach, I think. at least the final scene with the big rock (Haystack Rock). Still should've known the answer though! Cool to see my home state get a mention!
I think an Oregon trivia quiz should include my home town: 'What city has held a Shakespeare festival since 1935?' and some questions about their excellent wine valleys, Rogue, Applegate and the Umpqua....it is a lovely state
