Kept thinking Columbus was bay of pigs, like a complete idiot

My first thought was Bay of Pigs or the Cuba missile crisis. But I figured it out eventually.

I was thinking that too. Also somehow missed the twin towers being on fire and tried to guess what year France gave the USA the Statue of Liberty.

Me four. Also couldn't figure out why the guillotine one wasn't about the French revolution.
+14
Level 86
May 31, 2019
It is. The Revolution is considered to have lasted several years, at the very least until 1794. As for the guillotine, both Louis XVI's and Marie Antoinette's executions happened in 1793.

I saw it as Bay of Pigs as well until I clicked on the image and saw that it travel was also onto Hispaniola. Even after I clicked on the image I almost didn't get it because it was so small.

I didn't get the reference to 1966. It wasn't the year of her coronation or any other event I'm familiar with.

Level 84

It's the FIFA World Cup, celebrated in England (not the UK as a whole, just England) and won by the hosts.

In the photo, Queen Elizabeth II (as the hosts' Head of the State) is presenting the Jules Rimet trophy to Bobby Moore, captain of England.

Look more closely at the picture. The guy on the right holding the trophy is wearing a football jersey. He's not being coronated.

As an english football fan this offends me. Its one of the most iconic images of the 60s in england.

Lol, Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot. I knew the reference, but had no idea the year.

Level 72

I had no idea that pictures related to Guy Fawkes. How or why is it related to him!?

I also hadnt a clue what the sixth, non bay of pigs, clue related to.

+6
Level 74
Jun 9, 2019
The mask is a depiction of Fawkes face as popularized by the terrible "V for Vendetta" movie. The story swapped the religious dimension of the history for a political one, that may be why many people don't know the connection.
+1
Level 76
Aug 13, 2019
I didn't think it was a bad movie at all, but ok, never knew that mask referred to Guy Fawkes. I also don't know much about the gunpowder plot, except for that it comes up in Jetpunk quizzes quite often (and I always fail to answer correctly).. Perhaps I should read up on it!

My problem as well. I knew the reference but no clue as to the year.
+1
Level 76

I didn't know the year either, so I just went consecutively through years in the general time period. Luckily, I chose to start at 1600.
+2
Level 75
Aug 14, 2019
I wasn't being serious - I'm British and we had Guy Fawkes imagery drilled into us from a young age. Have to admit that I didn't know the date though.

And it's now twice that I didn't notice the smoking buildings in the background of the Statue of Liberty picture - thought it was asking for the year that the statue was erected in NY

The fifth of November, but not the year :D

So... 1605 King James 1 is still alive.

question: "Can you guess the years that are represented by these images? "

Why is Mandela's 1994 picture in black and white? so misleading.
+9
Level 83
Aug 13, 2019
Not misleading if you know literally anything at all about Mandela.
+3
Level 76
Aug 13, 2019
If the picture was older, as you may suggest, Mandela would've appeared much younger, too.
+7
Level 67

Was there any particular significance to the 1966 World Cup? It seems like an odd choice compared to all the other events.
+1
Level 58
Aug 13, 2019
Not particularly. It's just very important in England because it's the only time we've won anything. We're the only country who has won the World Cup but never won anything else - so everyone in England knows that date.
+1
Level 79

England is the first country to win the Cricket World Cup, Football World Cup and Rugby World Cup (all three).
+7

that's almost as impressive as that time that god conquered death after inventing it.
+2
Level 74

England is the only country that plays all three to a significant extent :-). Could make a slight case for Scotland & Ireland at cricket, and Australia & South Africa at football, but none are close to being World Cup contenders.

It's very significant ... but only to about 50 million of us; though I'm surprised the rest of the world doesn't know because we mention it enough times ;-)

Can you just imagine the level of whinging if one of the answers was the US Olympic hockey team's victory over the USSR? Or maybe when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004?
+2
Level 58
Aug 20, 2019
I think the Olympics would be OK because it's a world wide event and a reasonably famous story, but yes I'd find the baseball a bit odd - though not whinge-worthy.

I'd expect an average of one one or two whinges each time the quiz was featured. Tolerable.

+2
Level 58
Aug 20, 2019
I think a picture of Franz Beckenbauer with the trophy in 1974, or Maradona in 1986 would also get at least 30%. Lots of people watch the World Cup and know the history, and those images get shown on TV a lot.

The World Series, despite the name, is virtually unknown outside of North America. The FIFA World Cup is known globally except seemingly in North America. The picture could have been of any captain holding the trophy and many would know the year

I knew everything exept of the Guy guy whom I've never heard of and the one with Queen Elizabeth. I couldn't for the life of me understand what is that white thing the guy was holding. But I should've guessed it was about the world cup by the emblem on his shirt :/
