valedictorian in Australia means anyone who passes out/says goodbye. Person with best grades is dux, medallist, top honours

Yeah, Brit here and i had never heard of Valedictorian either. It may be a US thing, or else it has just passed me by.

I have heard of valedictorian as an American term, but it is never used here in New Zealand. The top scholar is Dux.

That's where the US term comes from. The class valedictorian traditionally gives the valedictory, or farewell speech at graduation. The salutatorian ranks second in class and gives the salutatory speech. I know because our daughter was her high school class valedictorian and had to write the speech.

Although I can hear 'the passing out parade at Puckapunyal' jingling in my head, the words 'passes out' only mean faints. Someone who faints is not called a valedictorian. But I agree, top of the class is the dux. I tried vixen long before I thought of voluptuous.

I don't think so. Is singing the opposite of speaking, or just different?

Poetry is the opposite of prose, not verse.

A viola is not "like" a large violin, it IS a large violin, an alto violin to be precise. As a matter of fact, that's how we call it in French.

Yes and I vote for va-va-voom to be accepted. :)

(I first tried vivacious, which isn't really about body shape, but neither is the origins of the word voluptuous)

Vixen ("a sexually attractive woman") for sexy and curvaceous?

Vixens don't have to be curvaceous, but the answer to this clue does have to be an adjective.

I don't think "Profession or trade" is a good definition for "vocation". I would try "inclination or inner call"
+1
Level 67
Aug 20, 2019
yea your job isnt (synonymous to) your vocation. A vocation is a calling. For some it turns into their job (Like wanting to heal people and becoming a doctor). For others it is something to do besides your job (like volunteering at a homeless shelter or help build schools in africa). It is about something that is (spiritually) important to you and you feel like you need to do. And when someone dedicates their lives to it in some cases it becomes their profession

Agreed, a vocation is more specific than than just one's profession or trade. It's a calling to do something worthy or that requires personal dedication.

I wish they would moderate the spellings that are accepted vs not accepted on this site. It's ridiculous. So many stupid, non-sensical spellings are CONSTANTLY accepted on this site. So many "h"s not required that make you have to delete...but then this same site doesn't accept alternative spellings for a word as obscure and hard to spell to English speakers as "vuvuzela". I mean, I tried vevuzela, vavuzela, vuvuzala...come on!. I eventually got it right, but it's so inconsistent on this site.

If you all can't figure out how to spell freaking "Pittsburgh" and stop making it so that I have to delete that annoying "H" at the end, then I'm gonna need you to get real with words like "vuvuzela"!! Seriously, you can't have it both ways! Either be lenient/strict with the spelling of EVERYTHING, or don't.

You are asking for your mistakes to be accepted, but other people's mistakes to not be accepted. How could we possibly do that?

No, they're asking for consistency, which in and of itself is a reasonable thing to ask. It's not hard to understand that, when you're not getting all defensive.

Couple of superfluous words:

a) occupation for one which one;

b) the the feudal system.

There's an extra "the" in the feudal one, and the occupation question sounds off. Maybe add a "for" at the end?

To be fair, as much as a pedant it makes me to say so, not all parish priests in the Church of England are vicars. Many are rectors. It depends from where they were once entitled to draw their income.

I think you should change the "word for word" question to "word-for-word" to distinguish it from asking for a word that means "word."
