Missed Argentina and Belgium. Thought South Africa would be there - they're cricket and rugger mad!

I really thought India would be WAY higher on the list-mostly due to the IPL, a multi-billion dollar industry. I mean, Virat Kohli, the second-most expensive player in the tournament is auctioned for about $2.6 million alone and TV networks pay billions for coverage rights. But anyway, fun quiz (mostly dominated by soccer-loving countries) :D

$2.6 million isn't much. An average player is the second league of English football can go for much more than that.

Yes but the IPL runs for 6-8 weeks in the year. Add in his earnings from other T20 competitions, representative matches and endorsements and Kohli would be right up there with the highest earners in any sport

Kohli and all other BCCI contracted players cannot play in any other T20 league. Only IPL.

The very top cricket players (kolhi, Smith, Root) earn about $4m a year, which is small by soccer or American sports standards, but it's getting bigger. If England adopted a proper 20/20 league like the IPL its appeal and reach would grow massively.

IPL seems to be held back by the relatively few games played in a season. Their revenue per game is slightly higher than the Premier League but they only play 74 games compared to 380.

A little surprised to see China so low. I guess their massive spending to bring in foreign players to improve the Super League hasn't paid off yet.

Really just goes to show you how much sports can be an export (TV rights, merchandise rights, etc.).

The USA exports its sports all over the globe better than anyone by far, apparently. I was surprised how many multiples it exceeded any other country.

As a group, the top futbol/football leagues do quite well as well but I guess those countries don't have as many secondary sports to export like the USA does.

It's internal revenue in the USA. Football is global.

USA has the NBA, MLB, NFL and NHL as well as MLS, WNBA and a few real small leagues. Each of those four top leagues would be the highest grossing in almost every other country.

As I've said before, the American sports leagues generate enormous income within the USA itself, but none of them has a global presence.

With the growing popularity in the USA of futbol aka soccer, the money available to attract top players and so many places for them to spend it, and the increasing number of purpose built stadiums (even little Louisville, KY is building a 10,000 seat expandable to 20,00 seat stadium) the rest of the world may soon have yet another reason to hate the USA. Sorry guys, maybe you shouldn't have bragged so much about how much better soccer is than any other sport. Also remember that even David Beckham is part owner of a team that will begin playing in Miami in 2020.
