What a cool quiz! Had to have a few guesses on St Augustine. Knew he was from around there somewhere. Never heard of Mario. I kind just got it from the French surname.

Mario is a hockey player, one of the most famous of all times :).Canada's always a good guess when it comes to hockey.

Had no idea he was a hockey player. Tried France because of his name and when that didn't work the next logical guess was Canada.

My next guess after France was Switzerland ... and then Belgium ..... and then Andorra ... and then Liechtenstein ... and then Haiti ... and finally the give up button.

A rare case: his name means "the best" and he was the best.

"The best" would re-translate into "Lemeilleur". Le mieux is adverbial, and used in phrases like "le plus tôt le mieux." (the sooner the better).

I was just thinking how curious it is that jetpunkers know more about an ice hockey player (who I've never heard of and whose name doesn't appear on the first page of my search engine when I type in "Lemieux") than they do about one of the greatest saints in the history of Christendom. Try typing "Augustine" into your search engine and see what you get!

I guess hockey players are relevant to more people's lives, and I'm not sure that that's a bad thing.

Mario is one of the most famous ice hockey players in history. If he's not 2nd after Gretzky he's easily top 5. Also pretty famously from Montreal, Quebec. But even if you didn't know that, and just knew he was a hockey player, then the most obvious guesses would be 1. Canada 2. America 3. Russia 4. Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and Germany 5. Everywhere else... and given his last name Canada becomes even more obvious.

St. Augustine, as far as most people know, could have been born almost anywhere in Christendom which at the time included almost all of Europe, North Africa, Turkey and the Middle East. You may have heard him referred to as St Augustine of Hippo, but the average person doesn't know where Hippo is. It's not even called that anymore.

You might want to accept Numidia for St. Augustine, as that is what it was called at the time. Great quiz!!

Color me totally surprised about St Augustine! I would never have guessed. I tried every single European country, and was dubitatively starting on Middle East when I ran out of time. I'm not sure what time period he was from, but I would probably have gone trough South America before even trying Maghreb countries. Well well. Shows what I know. Great quiz!

When you say "from" do you mean where they were born? If that is the case Jean-Paul Marat was born in Switzerland. He lived most of his life in France

quizmaster, can you please take PABLO ESCOBAR from the list of Colombians???? I have to remind you he was a murderer and does not deserve to be in the same place as those you included in the list. As one of my fellow players wrote before, how about SOFIA VERGARA!

Trotsky should be Ukraine as he was born in Ukraine which was at the time a part of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. He had no association with modern Russia
