Wikipedia: "In the Roman infantry, centurions initially commanded a centuria or 'century'. Centuries, or centuriae, developed from the Roman tribal system under the Servian reforms and could contain 200 to 1000 legionaries."
From Wikipedia: "Most centurions commanded groups of centuries of around 80 legionaries [...]"
here follows a footnote:
"The centuries (centuriae) commanded by the centurion theoretically derive from centum ("hundred"), but that connection is now disputed. It certainly meant "company" or "tribe". "
A century was made out of 10 contubernii. A contubernium was a pack of soldiers who ate and slept together in the same tent; there were often 10 men in a contubernium, but they were 8 soldiers and 2 "helpers"... so a century is indeed 80 soldiers.
...Except if you're talking about the early Republic. There were 100 soldiers by century, but it's pretty much a footnote compared to the imperial army.
