I was going to say the same thing. It is a borrowed word (from Spanish, obviously), not slang.

Definition of slang: a type of language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, are more common in speech than writing, and are typically restricted to a particular context or group of people.

This applies to the word 'Nada,' which I have used informally in speech.

What do you mean that applies to the word "nada"? "Nada" is directly equivalent to the word "nothing"- it's not considered an informal word (acceptable in school & work writing), it's not more common in speech than writing, nor is its use restricted to a certain context or group of people (it is the standard spanish word meaning "nothing", it is not a regional word)

you should think about including "pyromaniac" to the arsonist one.
+2
Level 65
Jun 25, 2015
A pyromaniac is just someone who likes fire. They don't necessarily commit crimes.

It also means pyromaniac:

Synonyms for firebug

noun, person who sets fires

arsonist, incendiary, pyromaniac

The diamond clue tripped me up for a while because ice (as in frozen water), an inorganic, crystalized, ordered solid, is considered a mineral in its own right. So I spent a minute trying 'frozen water' etc, thinking the QM was trying to trick us.

Cursed by my own pedantry.

Gaol? Have you timed traveled and found yourself stuck here in the 21st century? Unfortunately you missed Marty and Doc Brown a few years back in 2015. But look for the schematics of a flux capacitor integrated into an automobile Delorean which is a type of horse carriage. I hope you find your way home soon!

We still use gaol in our country, and it was more popular than 'jail' in the late 1900s...

Television has been quite famously called "the boob tube" in the USA since I was a kid 50 years ago, it is not at all a new term. I can only guess those that find it odd are either very young or not from the US, meaning that it may be just an expression here and not worldwide. A Boob Tube as a Tube Top is something I certainly have never heard of in all MY years, making it likely a UK expression or an expression elsewhere. I'm just surprised because so many magazine articles and books (even book TITLES) refer to television as "The Boob Tube" - it's not particularly obscure.

I usally know quite a bit of vocabulary and slang wether it is uk or us (I am often surprised that some english speakers have never heard of expressions I have heard of quite often, even more the case between UK and US, it seems there is zero exposure to the other party)

I dont recall ever hearing boob tube used for television though. What do boobs have to do with it? (Tube top I have heard of)

A detective would be a "gumshoe" or, if in private practice, a PI

(Private Investigator). I have always heard of a "spook' as being slang for "Spy" (as in James Bond).

I tried Hawaiians for the Five-0, because I'm an idiot. Took me a minute to realize that Hawaii Five-0 referred to the police in Hawaii, not the Hawaiians themselves.
+1
Level 85

According to Wikipedia, 5-0 was originally a reference to Hawaii being the 50th state. I don't know when it allegedly stopped referring to Hawaiian state police and started referring to police in general.

Maybe accept more possible answers for barf? I nearly tried every synonym there is under the sun ( besides vomit..) First throw up and puke, then other terms and all variations of it, gag, hurl, retch, upchuck, heave, spew and several more. I really couldnt think what you were asking for and started doubted the meaning. (that I didnt get vomit is my own problem, but surely other opions should be accepted especially puke I think that is a proper word, not slang, though not a medical term (Actually I dont think vomit is either, it would be something like expell, emit or regurgitate)

Never head someone use arsonist before. "He's an arson" sound better to my ears.
