The problem with the Wyoming one is that the Wyoming Cowboys are just a shade less prominent than the Dallas Cowboys.

The reason that warriors is the least guessed answer is because the mascot of the University of Hawaii is the RAINBOW Warriors. It is like saying that the mascot for the University of Arizona is the Cats. And on another note U of A is much more successful athletically than the University of Kentucky.

A couple of updates are needed. North Dakota is no longer the Fighting Sioux (should probably just use Bison for NDSU) and Hawaii is now the Rainbow Warriors.

Here are some suggestions for the missing seven states:

(1) Connecticut -- Huskies (U Conn)

(2) Maine -- Mules (Colby College)

(3) Nevada -- Wolf Pack (University of Nevada)

(4) New Hampshire -- No name (Dartmouth, which abandoned the old name "Indians" long ago and never replaced it. If you want a less provocative but more confusing choice, there are always the Ravens of Franklin Pierce and the Wildcats of UNH. Or the Pilgrims of New England College, although I doubt many people have heard of the college, much less the team.)

(5) Rhode Island -- Friars (Providence College)

(6) Vermont -- Knights (Vermont Technical College)

(7) Wyoming -- Cowgirls (University of Wyoming)

And while we are at it we might as well change Fighting Sioux, since UND has no nickname or mascot until 2015, to the Bisons for North Dakota State, and Warriors to Rainbow Warriors, since the University of Hawai'i has now readopted that name for all its teams.

Yeah, I've lived in Maine all my life. Bowdoin, Bates and Colby are considered Little Ivy League colleges and are perennial Top 25 small colleges, costing more than Harvard. But I have never heard of the Mules. Bowdoin is okay in hockey. But the University of Maine at Orono's hockey and women's basketball have made names for themselves over the years.

The first school that comes to mind for Huskies is Washington. I thought of that - and the ambiguity with UConn - when bemoaning the choice of Seahawks to represent the state.

If Eastern Michigan had done better with their naming after being forced to change from Hurons, we could have put the emu's. Instead they chose the very boring eagle as their mascot.

Most pitiful is that the mascot for California is one chosen for its team when they were from Minnesota. Very few lakes in CA, 10,000 lakes in MN.

My high school team mascot was the Wildcats. I tried typing in Virginia but it wasn't accepted. Actually isn't Wildcats the most common and generic sports mascot there is and that's why they used it in High School Musical?

There are 50 states but only 44 answers here--and one of them is not a state. I think we need some revision to include the six missing states so as not to offend anyone (like me, for example--my state is not on here).
