Super soaker should be eliminated. It's a local brand, not sold worldwide.

pretty sure they have them in the netherlands aswell. Atleast I have heard of them. (might be that people would just call all the waterpistols that needed to be pumped to build pressure that.)

The "Superstorm" Sandy thing is a bit overhyped. Only a few people died. Whereas, the tornadoes in the south in April 2011 got no attention what-so-ever.

What are you talking about?! After the tornadoes in Tuscaloosa, AL thats all i heard about for the next couple of months! That may be because i live in AL, but your statement of they got no attention what-so-ever is false my friend.

You think Superstorm Sandy was hyped? That storm was one of the most devastating in the nation. Just because the death toll is low doesn't mean it wasn't devastating.

I actually agree, I'm tired of hearing about it. It's because it's New York, and New York is apparently a big deal or something. It's no more important than anywhere else in the USA or the world.

Dec 24, 2017
Oh yeah, it's only the economic and cultural epicenter of North America. I'm not a fan of the city, but to downplay it like it's no more important than Alturas, CA or Katy, TX is the height of absurdity. Stop with that nonsense.

The death toll was 285. I would agree that people's lives in New York are no more important than people's lives elsewhere, but you could definitely make a sound case that New York is a relatively important place. It generates lots of revenue domestically and internationally, is a cultural hub for the arts (music, theater, art), and is visited by millions each year. Also, it's just in poor taste to downplay someone's tragedy.

Are you insane? The entire Eastern seaboard is still rebuilding from Sandy! Atlantic City is about to go bankrupt as a result of Sandy. The death toll, thankfully, was not as high because people prepared in advance and many of the coastal towns and communities were evacuated before the storm hit. But to say it was overhyped? You are out of your mind.

Oh look, it's the disaster Olympics! "My natural disaster was worse than yours!" Seriously, you're unhinged if you think the hardship and suffering that accompanied those storms can be quantified.

Superficial should work for unnecessary...Straight out of the dictionary "3. Apparent rather than actual or substantial 4. trivial; insignificant"

Mar 6, 2014
The primary meaning of superfluous is unnecessary. The primary meaning of superficial is at a surface level. Or, in general, we could stop the "The fourth meaning of this word that I thought of should be the answer instead of the first meaning of that word I couldn't remember" comments. But that might be asking too much.

Just because it is the third or fourth meaning listed in the dictionary doesn't make it less important than another word which is listed first. Dictionaries order their meanings in different ways, including diachronically or by current frequency of use which changes from year to year. The context of the sentence is more important in determining which word best fits. Therefore, it seems to me that superficial could also be accepted. (And yes, it was the first one I thought of.)

Jul 3, 2015
Neither 'Apparent rather than actual or substantial' nor 'trivial; insignificant' mean 'unnecessary.' Superficial should not be accepted. To use 'superficial' in place of 'unnecessary' is incorrect, e.g. "There were 15 party bags at Jasmine's party, but only 12 guests, so 3 of them were superficial." 'Superfluous' works.

I tried spelling superficial three or four different ways. Had it right the first time, so I guess the rest of my tries were superfluous? Heard of the word but never used it much, I must be superficial.

When it came to the words ending on -est, my first thought was "interest", and was wondering what else this word could be called. I probably found the only word with that ending that is not an SL.
