Interestingly, go ahead one decade to start at 1970 and Michigan's growth drops by more than half to 12.5%. The decline of domestic cars was not kind to the state.

Start at 1980 and West Virginia's loss more than doubles to -7.4%.

Largely rust belt states and states where white flight often meant fleeing to suburbs across state lines (e.g., Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York, Rhode Island). Was a bit confused about North and South Dakota, especially since they've been growing a lot faster lately.

I was also surprised by the Dakotas. Maybe their boom is too recent to significantly effect the overall trend since 1960?

The Dakotas both first hit the 600K mark in the 1920 census. Both would spend the rest of the 20th century drifting up and down the 600s.

Only in the past 30 years did growth pick up.

South Dakota's has been sure and steady, while North Dakota's has been a wilder trajectory.

A lot of people are moving out of NYC, so New York's growth is limited.
