I still use the phrase "double whammy" when two bad things happen at once. "I tripped over the sidewalk then fell into a puddle!" "Oh, man, double whammy!"
level 42

except that I think "double whammy" has nothing to do with TV. I think the game show got the word "whammy" from the general usage in the language including, but not specifically from, "double whammy"

Cool story, bro. No one is saying the show INVENTED the word. It's a catchphrase. South Park didn't create the name Kenny. Heroes didn't create cheerleaders. Who cares if Press Your Luck used a word that already existed?

Woohoo! Got em all, first try! Oh... actually, I watch way too much TV, don't I?

HAHAHA! I first thought "Okily dokily neighborino" was a reference to Wilson, from Home Improvement. I retyped it 3 times before I realized I had the wrong show!

Sorry to be pedantic here, but the "Now you know..." phrase was on a bunch of PSAs featuring characters from G.I. Joe. It wasn't on the show itself.
level 44
Apr 25, 2014
The PSA's were originally aired at the end of each show, making it difficult to distinguish that they were not part of the show.

It's "stop being polite", not "stop being nice"

Am I the only one that has never heard of arrested development or survivor (as a TV show. I heard of the band(Eye of the tiger))

"Survivor" is the evil father of all "reality" television. The losing contestants are told that "the tribe has spoken" after being voted off the island.

Survivor and American Idol had a bunch of crappy reality babies together

MTV's "The Real World" was the first reality TV show. "Survivor" I suppose was the first prime time one?

anyone remember the Press Your Luck guy that learned the pattern of the lights and COULDN'T lose?
level 64
Sep 15, 2018
Yeah, then they changed the pattern on him and you could see his face was still smiling as he was watching the lights "Oh %#&$@ they got me on national TV".

You might be thinking of someone else, because that didn't happen with this guy.
level 60
Nov 5, 2018
Oh, yeah! They even had a story about that guy on This American Life!
level 75
Nov 5, 2018
I saw that show. They let the guy continue on even after the broadcast ended, and they taped it and played it on air the next day. At one point he passed his remaining spins to the next contestant who whammied, then the other contestant whammied and passed the spins back to him, and he won more before passing the spins again and the game finally ended.

Literally yes.

All I could think of for "eat my shorts" was the movie, Grumpy Old Men." I barely got it in time. (Never seen an episode of the Simpsons, but eventually remembered hearing that phrase attributed to Bart.)
