please accept ironsides for the Civil War early steamship with metal armor. great quiz!

Level 67

No, Ironsides still means the U.S.S. Constitution, which was not an ironclad. How about sculls for shells, however?

Okay scull will work now

What about "Sternwheeler"? Might also be known more popularly as "Riverboat".

The fleet of them in Pittsburgh is called the Gateway Clipper Fleet - so Clipper was one of my guesses, which inadvertently got me credit for another clue I didn't know. :-)

Yes, please accept "riverboat." That is what I've always known it as. Granted, wikipedia is not right about everything, but it agrees with me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paddle_steamer

Could "lifeboat" also be accepted as a vessel used by the Coastguard?

Lifeboats are used by everybody. You could also ask if steel is an acceptable type of vessel used by the Coasties.

please accept "Gin palace" for a rich man's boat... yachts have sails....calling those petrol/diesel driven monstrosities "yachts" is an insult to any true sailor
+3
Level 89
Apr 21, 2019
Actually yacht means a fast naval vessel used to hunt pirates. So a diesel speedboat like a Navy PT-Boat or PBR is truer to a yacht than a clumsy Bermuda rig.

The word means "hunt". Calling some weekend warrior's blowboat a yacht is an insult to any true pirate hunter.
