I have not heard of a "wooden nickel", but I figured it out based on the other clues. This is the case for many of the clues.

It's from an old US saying: "Don't take any wooden nickels." Since a nickel is a US coin (made of metal, of course), it basically means "Don't let yourself be cheated."

The nickel/coin one is ridiculous - please remove it! Unlike the other questions, it focuses on a very specific type of knowledge, and is something you would only know if you come from a certain country AND a certain time period.

I agree a 100% but you may get used to it on here. Far far too many quizzes have a question that you would only get if you lived/grew up in North America. It doesn't get frustrating at all.

Level 35

Just because you don't know something doesn't automatically make it ridiculous. And if you want more diverse questions, them make some yourself. This is a fun quiz, not something to get so worked up over.

I'm not from that country and wasn't around during that time period and I knew the answer. Maybe just accept that you don't know some things, try to learn from it and move on.

To be fair a lot of these quizzes give Americans too much of an advantage, but then same with the rest of the anglosphere. I think he has a point. If it's a specifically US-centric topic then fine. Also, if it's a certain level of obscurity, with equally obscure questions from other parts of the world, then also fine. But if all the questions are relatively common knowledge, but then one or two are obscure only for those that live outside the states, then that makes it a bit rubbish. Fun quiz though. I've pretty much come to accept that it's a bit US-centric on here and it's taught me a lot of things about the US so it's a good way to learn something while avoiding work.

Knowing information gives you an advantage. And there's no reason why it's impossible for you to know this information if you weren't born in the United States. You could be a numismatist, you could have read something at some point in your life, or you could have acquired the information somewhere else. In spite of this, you get people (mostly Brits, it seems, occasionally an Australian or some other European) constantly complaining about how it's *impossible* to know virtually anything that pertains to the United States. This is 1) wrong 2) obnoxious and 3) obviously the product of bias. I've seen many, many, many questions on this site that you would be more likely to know the answer to if you were British, or European, or Chinese, or Brazilian... never or very rarely seen anyone complain about those questions. So, no, he doesn't have a point. He's just whining, inaccurately, and getting backed up by Algernon who does the same thing on almost every quiz he ever takes.

I guarantee that if Germany ruled the world, you'd have to answer questions about Mettigel, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Daniela Katzenberger and German Ratespielmeister would not care about your complaints.
+1
Level 80
Oct 8, 2020
I guarantee you if this was the case far fewer of those complaints would be made by Americans. I dunno. Maybe if this rule had gone on for 50 or 60 years and people around the world had had time to build up some irrational hatred toward all things German. Meet me back here in 2150 and we'll check to see who's complaining about questions on Chinese currency.

I understand where the sentiment comes from. People take little stuff pretty seriously if it has a social meaning, and that's the case with trivial knowledge. Large parts of the internet feel like an inside joke between Americans and as a foreigner that makes you a bit of a misfit. You have nowhere to go where you are in on the joke. Being an outsider is one of the worst feelings for humans. Here it mixes with already established anti-Americanism, which has less to do with trivia knowledge but also roots in a sense of inferiority. Hence the strong reactions. I doubt Americans will be much different when their time comes.

+5
Level 67
Jan 16, 2020
That's a really strange wish considering they are two completely different things. A browser can interpret HTML, javascript, and CSS and render a webpage. A search engine is a web page that can be visited by using a browser, in order to find other web pages.

But most people call it a search engine so why the jargon?
+1

surely then the names are backwards? The engine does the work, interpreting, and the browser does the driving directions. Both are necessary parts of a search.

Clearly, a lot of people do not know what browsers and search engines really are. That's fine; I just think it's interesting that people assume the quiz is wrong without knowing what they're talking about when it's quite easy to find out (using a search engine...)
