Another quiz that took me way too long to make. I used a program to make the list and place the dots, so I'm pretty sure they are correct.

It may seem like there are "missing" cities, but there are not. For instance, Pittsburgh doesn't appear because it is smaller than Cleveland. But Cleveland also doesn't appear because it is smaller than Detroit. So a large blank space is created.

Fantastic, I was going to ask you how you worked out the data and then placed the dots! How does the program for placing the dots work and can it be used for other maps? I hope to see continental versions etc soon!

But why does it do that there, and not, say, in southern Texas? Similar looking area has 6 cities listed, but nothing for Philly, Washington, Baltimore? I smell a glitch.

@bakainu

The "glitch" may be that Texan bigger cities are quite alone, but in the northeast they are closer together.

I think bakainu is right. If nothing else, there seems to be inconsistency in the distance cutoff. Corpus Christi and Laredo are closer than 200 km. Cleveland-Pittsburgh is farther than Corpus-Laredo unless maybe your using an edge to edge measure rather than center to center.

Would this be the reason why GR is missing from Michigan? The population at the time was roughly 195,000

How does you define city? If it just is the highest number of inhabitants within 200 km, Alaska should have some more. As I see it, these should be on:

Bethel

Unalaska

Utqiakvik (Barrow)

Nome

Kotzebue

There may be more but these were he ones i found.

Source: I used wikipedias list of cities in Alaska and checked it on Google Maps.

I believe Peoria, IL needs to be on this list. We are 170 miles from both Chicago and St. Louis (or 270 km) and there isn't any cities around us that are bigger. Closest is Davenport, Iowa but it's not quite as populous.

I just saw that Springfield's population really jumped in the past decade, so depending on what numbers you are using, it could be Springfield that pushes Peoria off of the list.
