Maybe it was saving money on toilet paper that made them so wealthy.

Or... maybe it was all the wealth that both drove up housing prices and generated large amounts of tax revenue that along with liberal politics funded extensive programs to aid low-income and indigent people, making the city simultaneously too expensive a place for many to afford housing and also an attractive destination for homeless persons to go or stay.

Or... [insert] some ignorant and disparaging obvious sour grapes remark about Democrats.

All of the above seems equally plausible.
