Please accept lift for elevator for the sake of us Limies. I heard a story once about an exchange between a front desk clerk and an American tourist at the Dorchester Hotel in London. I don't know if it's true but I hope it is.

Tourist: Where are the elevators?

Clerk: The lifts are over there sir

Tourist: Call them elevators. We invented the damn things

Clerk: Yes sir, but we invented the language

Yeah, that didn't happen. No one cares that you guys call it a lift. And no American doesn't know what you mean by "lift".

From what I've heard and read in my life it sure seems to be the Brits who actually get upset at Americans calling things by different words, not the other way around. Americans are usually just amused to learn Brits call things by a different name. It's Brits who seem to get all pretentious and indignant about crap like this. Ever since the Revolutionary war or the Tyranny against the crown, British people wanted to distance themselves from everything American. That is until WW1 and then again in WW2. Here's one...The British hung a picture of George Washington in the Toilet. The American said "Why? To scare the shit out you". I think it is weird that if you travel a certain distance in America or UK, they have different accents and names for things. Cockney and Boston accent, Pop vs Soda etc.

I was really scratching my head on that one. Tried bank, hospital, etc., but was mostly confused as hell how the Fugitive had ascended to such a height in our culture that it warranted inclusion on this quiz. Then I saw the answer. Oh.

That's the real tragedy. They're missing out on perhaps the most stilted interviewer in game show history---not to mention the unfailingly lame anecdotes of Jeopardy contestants. It's dynamite television.
