Not to mention time-consuming. And it seemed the ones I didn't have time to click on were the ones with the best clues - palm trees, beehive, covered wagons...I only knew 16.

Still...well they reinstated the rebel flag when schools were forced to integrate during the civil rights movement. Prior to then, the rebel flag was not part of the state flag.

They were forced to remove the image of a middle finger a few years back, so they're just left with the fond memories of the Confederacy.

Yeah that's one of the many reasons Alabama loves Mississippi. They're the only state that makes Alabama look good.

Most of these flags are really terrible. No wonder no one recognizes them, or flies them (except the cool ones like Texas, Colorado, California, Alabama...). The state governments should all watch Roman Mars' Ted talk on city flags and go back to the drawing board (or hire a graphic designer...). I live in Seattle, and am really sad that my city and state have such lame flags. https://www.ted.com/talks/roman_mars_why_city_flags_may_be_the_worst_designed_thing_you_ve_never_noticed

Many of them have too much detail. The nice flags are those that can be easily printed and seen from afar. So many of the flags have depictions of entire scenes -- Which I imagine is quite difficult to print, let alone recognize

I had no idea Maryland's flag was so off the reservation. It looks like it should be the standard of the royal family of Luxembourg or something.

You're not too far off, it is representative of the family shield of Lord Baltimore if I'm not mistaken.

For a fun, silly read, check out this totally tongue-in-cheek ranking of all the US state flags (plus the District of Columbia, which I wish would have been included here, because it's actually a very nice, striking design). http://archives.bluenationreview.com/ranked-all-50-state-flags/

First, best state flag Second, i think it was a combination of the flags of two primary land owners (Lord Baltimore and someone else)

Took me three times but helped me learn some of the flags I didn't really know. The dates and pictures on the flags really help with guessing. The best flag is New Mexico by a mile, although I suppose the Zia could be a little bigger. I also really like Arizona. I think underrated flags are Hawaii, Ohio and Rhode Island, even Wyoming. You need something big, bold, easily recognizable, can be seen from a distance. I do kind of like Virginia, because it's so gonzo. The absolute worst flags? Wisconsin (1848!!!), South Dakota, North Dakota (not very good artistry at all), Nevada (so many lost opportunities, why isn't their flag the oro y plata one? Also, why does Idaho need to say "Idaho" two times on its flag?

Wyoming, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii and Alaska are cool. All the others are kind of awful. "Let's just take a Royal Blue background and put a children's drawing seal on it" :)
