I didn't know that Mississippi still used the flag of the Confederacy.

I had no idea Maryland's flag was so off the reservation. It looks like it should be the standard of the royal family of Luxembourg or something.

You're not too far off, it is representative of the family shield of Lord Baltimore if I'm not mistaken.

Maryland has the best flag...it incorporates both the coats of arms used by George Calvert. You will find the Marylanders use the flag in many ways, including on their vehicles, as articles of clothing, household decorations. We love our flag :-)

For a fun, silly read, check out this totally tongue-in-cheek ranking of all the US state flags (plus the District of Columbia, which I wish would have been included here, because it's actually a very nice, striking design).

First, best state flag

Second, i think it was a combination of the flags of two primary land owners (Lord Baltimore and someone else)

It's one of the few that's actually decent imo. Most of the others are so incredibly boring and similar. It was the first one I recognized because it at least has some character and distinguishing features. New mexico and S. Carolina are kinda cool and different, too. The rest are ugly as sin.

Took me three times but helped me learn some of the flags I didn't really know.

The dates and pictures on the flags really help with guessing.

The best flag is New Mexico by a mile, although I suppose the Zia could be a little bigger.

I also really like Arizona. I think underrated flags are Hawaii, Ohio and Rhode Island, even Wyoming. You need something big, bold, easily recognizable, can be seen from a distance.

I do kind of like Virginia, because it's so gonzo.

The absolute worst flags? Wisconsin (1848!!!), South Dakota, North Dakota (not very good artistry at all), Nevada (so many lost opportunities, why isn't their flag the oro y plata one? Also, why does Idaho need to say "Idaho" two times on its flag?

+2

The blue one with the state seal is far better.
+3
Level 78
Nov 21, 2020
Maryland's is pretty cool. Ohio's is distinctive. Texas and North Carolina copied each other and Chile. New Mexico is pretty cool. South Carolina's is good but would be better if the blue was a couple shades lighter. I would guess Idaho's says 'Idaho' twice because it is so boring that they need to remind people who it belongs to.

A lot of these states didn't have flags until the late 1800's, and I think they made them quickly to put them on official stamps or something like that? So a lot of states haven't felt the need to change theirs in decades, as doing so takes time, effort and money.
