this should be one of those quizzes where you have to put the answer in a specific box. I managed to get 13 without actually knowing anything.

Yup. A case of "list American cities" for me too. I got 19/22.

Can anyone explain to me why and how suburbs exist? I understand what they are, but why do they exist at all? My city just incorporated instead of having a bunch of suburbs.

Many people want to live near cities for the culture, but they don't want to raise families (or live alone) in that setting. Cities are also much more diverse than suburbs, which means people of the typical suburbanite breed have less of a voice if they stay in the city. If you're a "yuppie" suburbanite-type who stays in a city, your voice is competing with all kinds of people for influence with government and culture, but if you move to the suburbs, you're surrounding yourself with people who generally think, earn, and act like you, and share your values. And you can have a local government that serves those values, instead of competing in a major city with other demographics that don't share your concerns.

Boise is not a "major" city by anyone's stretch of imagination, but great quiz!

I am honestly surprised that 45% of people got Detroit correct. I live in MI so it's easy for me, but a more interesting figure in my opinion would be how much of those people guessed and got it right, or cheated.

I only guessed it because I thought I remembered the movie Grosse Point Blank was set in Michigan.
