Okay, not accepting "scepter" for "sceptre"? Then you need to warn that its British Spelling - sorry far more English speakers spell it "er" than "re". BOTH spellings are correct.

Meant to include both spellings, but made a typo. Fixed now!

wrong about the "more English speakers". Americans again thinking they are the dominant life force....

(Asia, Africa, and Oceania exist. Europe teaches traditional English spellings as a second language)

Descendants may want to be included for the question regarding Heir, one's offspring, unless the clue gets changed a little bit to be more specific

As soon as I read "sense of smell" all I could think was "olfaction." (Also agree with accepting descendant, since that is the definition of scion)

Isn't this all a bit moot, as "olfaction" doesn't contain a silent c?

moot means either debatable or not relevant - it's certainly relevant and I suspect you meant the opposite of debatable

The original point is irrelevant, as far as a bona fide answer goes, yes.

Perhaps "cogniscient" could be allowed for "conscious". The definition also fits.

Perhaps you were thinking of “cognisant”/“cognizant”, neither of which has a silent “c”.

While “cogniscient” seems to be used frequently, I don’t think it is a valid English word.

I don't think "acquit" has a silent c does it?

It's like "ack-kwit" or "ack-wit" no?

+1
Level 83
Jan 23, 2024
I guess because if it were spelled 'aquit', then the pronunciation wouldn't change? The 'c' can be removed without effect, but the 'q' can't.

Scent is a smell, it's absolutely not the sense of smell. Behave already. If you have a sinus infection, you don't lose your scent. In fact your scent probably gets worse to other people because they can smell it and you can't, as you've lost your sense of smell

Level 78

I'd agree. It's not accurate. I challenge you to find that definition of scent in a dictionary. The sense of smell is the olfactory sense. To scent is to perceive via that olfactory sense.

Before you ask, yes, I got it, but I didn't like it.
