Messi 2014 , Kahn, Rossi, and Schillaci were the wrong calls.*

Considering that Messi won again in 2022 because he was wrongly named as MOTM in the final (2 goals, lost the ball in the build up to France's 2nd goal) instead of Mbappe (3 goals), then there's an argument to be made that he's been incorrectly awarded the trophy twice.

Having said that, if Mbappe had won the final's MOTM, he'd have had 4 awards for the trophy, level with Messi. I'd still have given the Golden Ball to the Argentine though.

*Robben, Ronaldo, Conti, Matthaus, for those of you still reading. Also: Cannavaro over Zidane.

mbappé made a massive comeback, even though he was absent for the first part of the game, and france just lost on penalties. mbappé scored against australia, denmark, poland and argentina yet still didn't get the golden ball? robbery

You know football is more than just scoring goals right? And overall Messi performed the best during the tournament, which is why he deserved the golden ball. Mbappe deservedly got the golden boot for most goals, but performance-wise, Messi just edged it (and won the cup, which is a huge bonus for individual awards such as this one) which got him the golden ball.

So your acknowledging that it was about how well one played throughout the whole tournament, whilst ignoring messi's effort. Great play isn't about how well you do for five minutes in a match. It's consistency that counts. Messi has a moving threat every match he played in. 2018 Modric won it when Griezmann had a better world cup. No one's talking about that.

They reason people like you are picking at random arguments is simply because you don't like the man winning. Rough for you honestly.

The Golden Ball Award is for the best overall player. This includes goals, assists, passes, and penalties. Even though Mbappe scored more goals than Messi, Messi was awarded it because he was a better overall player.

I said Messi 2014 was the wrong call. Messi 2022 was correct.
