The magnetic field doesn't affect the nitrogen or oxygen in our atmosphere. It is gravity that keeps these molecules from escaping to space.

While I agree that gravity is the better answer, doesn't the magnetic field partially stop the solar wind that could blow the atmosphere away?

I'd expect pearl to dissolve in vinegar (chemical reaction), not to melt (i.e. to just change its aggregate state).
