Any reason why "St John's" was accepted but not "St John"? I was hitting my head against the wall trying to think what else the port in NB could be.

According to the Canadian Press style guide, the convention is always to spell out Saint in New Brunswick and always to abbreviate it in Newfoundland, to avoid confusion between the two.
