Mal's "Walk the Coast of Africa" from Egypt Going West.
Anti-Clockwise trip around Africa, Start Egypt - Finish Egypt.
Any country with 2 separate coastlines must include both:
Do not use Cabinda:
Major direction of travel is given in Direction Hint W=West S=South E=East N=North:
RC = Republic of the Congo / DRC = Democratic Republic of the Congo
This is what tripped me up also. I kept misspelling it equitorial rather than equatorial. The other quizzes accept the "i" but this one doesn't. At least I learned something; I thought I was spelling it right...
I actually read the instructions (weird, I know) and thought by "Do not use 'Cabinda'" you meant we should use the name of the country, Angola. Seems odd for a quiz based on walking the coast to not include that part of the coast.
Good question Zefyrinus, I have not included Cabinda as I don't know which country to align it with. The Oman enclave you mention is just another part of Oman, whereas Cabinda is claimed by a couple of countries. (I am of the opinion that Cabinda should be an independent country if that were the wishes of the majority of the population in a democratic vote)
I agree with Djilas, at present it is part of Angola, once you start worrying about all 'contested' countries you open a can of worms. As for Spanish Sahara, now called Western Sahara, I don't know who is pushing for it's independence but could it exist financially without Morocco's assistance?......... I'm leaving things as they stand till changes occur.
On 18 July 2006, the Cabinda Forum for Dialogue (FCD) and FLEC-Renovada led by António Bento Bembe signed a second definite cease fire with the Angolan government known as the Memorandum of Understanding for Peace in Cabinda. The event took place in Macabi, Cabinda. The agreement assured Cabinda's status as a PART OF ANGOLA, provided special economic status and local governance powers to Cabinda, and condemned further acts of insurgency and separatism. The treaty received criticism from Bembe's opponents within the movement. The peace accord marked a sharp decrease in the conflict's intensity.[
Penon de Velez is actually an island off the coast of Morocco and is joined at low tide to the mainland by a narrow isthmus ....... The tiny Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla sit on the northern shores of Morocco's Mediterranean coast. Together they form the European Union's only land borders with Africa.
But you still included Ceuta and Mellila? and not Somaliland or Western Sahara. I agree that those 2 should not be considered but if you don't consider those 2 there is no question about not considering any contestion in Cabinda. You also don't consider Palestine in Asia? but still you talk about the contested region of Cabinda. Now, none of these countries I've listed I believe should be considered, but if you consider Cabinda as contested when it is clearly a part of Angola, you should include the 'countries' of Somaliland, Western Sahara and Palestine. Altogether though I really love this quiz and its concept.
Hi 'wiifly'....... I believe that any 'country' that wants independence should have the right, in a transparent and free vote for or against independence. Cabinda I feel should be allowed that facility. At present Cabinda is a part of Angola ...... I feel the same with Somaliland but at present the Nations of the World do not seem able to decide that question either and much as I would like to decide which countries should be independent many other nations have their own agendas........... Western Sahara is a different case I feel. Morocco is aided in it's fight for ownership mainly by France and it is only the interest to the problems of Western Sahara by President Trump and his national-security adviser, John Bolton that is giving any hope to the peoples of that area........... Palestine is such a convoluted problem that I'd rather leave it alone until those involved come to some sort of peaceful resolution.
It's overall a good quiz, however I really think Angola should be added in the year 2024. Cabinda is not the only coastal region in Africa to have some kind of political dispute, and it is far from the most controversial territory in Africa today.
Cabinda should be included too.
