EXCLUSIONS:

The Confederate States and the California Republic were excluded due to limited recognition of statehood.

Tabasco, The Rio Grandese Republic and The Cruzoob State are all excluded due to limited recognition of statehood.

Portugal does not appear since I couldn’t find anything suggesting that Portuguese presence in Barbados or Labrador were established colonies.

Japan’s conquest of the Aleutian Islands was excluded due to their briefness and military nature.

ASSIMILATIONS:

- England and Great Britain are included with the United Kingdom

- Denmark-Norway is included with Denmark

- Sweden-Norway is included with Sweden

- The Kalmar Union is included with Norway

- The Iberian Union is included with Spain

- Gran Colombia is included with Colombia

- The Greater Republic of Central America is included with the Federal Republic of Central America

- Variations in forms of government are excluded i.e. the French and Mexican Empires

EXTRA:

Belgium is on the list because of Santo Tomás, since the Guatemalan government retained control of the leased area it is greyed out.

East Germany is on the list because of Ernst Thälmann Island, due to ambiguity of ownership it is greyed out.

Hawaii is on the list because of The Republic of Hawaii, due to ambiguity of the continent Hawaii is a part of it is greyed out.

If you don’t agree with any of the decisions I made here I am happy to discuss them and maybe even have my opinion changed.

You literally say "name every country," yet have Texas and Vermont among the answers.

Vermont and Texas were both countries briefly before joining the United States.

What part of Venezuela?

Thanks

Mainly I put Venezuela on the list due to the Caribbean Isla de Aves. It could however, also be argued that various islands directly off the coast of mainland Venezuela are North American, depending on the description (i.e. Blanquilla, Isla la Orchila, etc. )

Belgium had a colony at Santo Tomás de Castilla in Guatemala, albeit short lived.

Officially Santo Thomás never had its sovereignty transferred to Belgium, instead the Belgian government was permitted to extract resources in the area, while the land still belonged to Guatemala. I had thought long and hard if I should include Belgium, but ultimately I decided otherwise.

Shouldn't Colombia's departure be when they lost Panama? It's not currently considered North American, unless they have some islands up in the Carribean.

Though it is debatable, I include all Caribbean islands as North American for the purposes of this quiz. Bajo Nuevo Bank and Serranilla Bank are the primary territories prompting me to include Colombia, however much like Venezuela, various coastal islands could be (depending on the definition) considered North American.
