Find The Mystery Country Using Color Clues - Randomized!

To start, name any country. The redder it appears, the closer you are. When you guess the mystery country, the quiz is over - you win!
The mystery country changes every time you play!
HUGE thanks to Simon1006 for figuring out how to make this, and to Stewart for helping with the CSS!

Firstly, I would like to thank Simon1006 for figuring out how to do this and Stewart for helping with the CSS. Without them, this quiz would not have been possible to make.

The quiz has 51 possible mystery countries - or 9,996 answers in total. More than 51 possible mystery countries would, unfortunately, exceed the 10,000 answer limit. :(

Also, due to the way this quiz is set up, we had to remove the answer cells. Sorry colorblind people

The series has officially ended since no sequels need to be made. We hope you enjoyed the series! :)

Try Simon1006's 'random mystery city' version here if you enjoyed!

It's not that easy to make, here's how we did it:

The trick was to use classes instead of paths in Inkscape, a trick that allowed us to make JetPunk render 1 individual path as 48 seperate. An extremely long class was added for each path (country). Basically, it was [(selected country)(mystery country)] 48 times per country. The classes were added to the quiz as well.

Then we calculated the distance between each mystery country and other / selected country (9,408 total) and added them onto one really long spreadsheet and added type-ins.

+1
Level 51
Apr 6, 2021
Yeah that's kinda odd, considering there are 48 possible mystery countries
+1
Level 51
Apr 6, 2021
Might be something wrong with the randomizer
+2
Level 61
Apr 6, 2021
The chance of taking it 7 times and not seeing any country twice is only about 65%, so it's not unlikely to see that you could get two countries twice in 7 takes
+1
Level 57
Apr 6, 2021
Your math is incorrect. There are 51 answers right? So if you want to get it at least twice, you have to multiply 1/51 times 1/51 which is 1/2601. Then divide that by seven times and you get...a one out of 371 plus a bunch of repeating decimals chance that you get both within 7. 1/371 is 0.27% or something like that. Not likely at all.
+4
Level 61
Apr 6, 2021
That is not correct Clutch. 1/2601 is the chance that you get ONE country twice in a row. However, there are 51 countries, so the chance of getting any country twice in a row is 1/51, or just under 2%. The chance of no country repeating is:

51/51*50/51*49/51*48/51*47/51*46/51*45/51=0.65, or 65%

+2
Level 61
Apr 7, 2021
The chance of getting 2 repeats within 7 countries is

51/51*50/51*49/51*48/51*47/51*105/2601 = 3.3% , so it will happen to 1 in 30 players playing 7 times, which seems reasonable

+1
Level 73
Apr 6, 2021
Why is 48 the limit? 51 countries would result in 9996 answers, just under the limit.

This might seem like a silly question, but how do you know which was the correct answer...? I was frantically typing in countries around south-east Asia until the quiz stopped and I thought the time ran out, but it actually ended because I got it... I'm not entirely sure which of the countries I typed was the correct one though! (was it Malaysia?)

Also, at the end of that play when the map was revealed, several countries stayed black - does that mean something? Mali, Libya, Ethiopia, Pakistan & Croatia remained noticeably noir.

Edit: Even while playing a second time, those countries didn't light up when I type them, and Seychelles is another. The second play was Estonia FTW. On Firefox/Mac.

+2
Level 61
Apr 7, 2021
The last country you type before the quiz ended (assuming you didn't run out of time) is the mystery country. When hovering over the map it'll also be labelled Mystery Country. As for those countries not lighting up, they work fine for me but as there have been several complaints I'll have another look

Malaysia is one of the options so that could very well be :)

Canada is closer to Norway and Sweden than you think. This can be seen easily if you take a look at a map of the Arctic Circle. And it's extremely close to Russia
+1

North pole @Turnbacktwo, this Mercator business mushes up our mental maps so hard I tell ya. I'd suggest taking a look at the lambert projection.
+1
Level 50

The countries at the north pole are extremely close, while the countries at the equatorial bulge are further.
+1
Level 52
Apr 8, 2021
And to show you how much more the Mercator boggles us, Somalia is white when Liberia is the mystery country because Africa is way wider than the Mercator depicts its as.
+1
Level 61
Apr 8, 2021
Somalia also shows up relatively white because most of Europe and Africa is closer. The colours are based on the number of countries closer, not the absolute distance. This is also the reason large parts of Oceania and Asia are red when you get an Oceanian mystery country
+1
Level 57
Apr 9, 2021
I prefer to make mystery quizzes by using complex calculations, not absolute numbers (Ranges, outliers, means, medians, etc.). This way you don't end up with a complete oddball.
+2
Level 61
Apr 10, 2021
I don't really know what you mean with that list of statistical terms, and the complexity of the calculations is the exact same, as you need to calculate the distance between the countries for both approaches.

The reason we went with number of countries closer instead of absolute distance is that if you were to get say Austria, either all of Europe is red and you're just guessing around, or you need to place the distance limits quite close. But if you do the latter and get say Tonga, barely any country will be red, meaning finding the mystery country will be extremely hard

Also, a small note: If you play the quiz hundreds of times you might begin to memorize the mystery countries and only type in those countries since there are 51 of them (more than 51 would exceed the 10k answer limit, unfortunately). To prevent this from happening, we change the list of mystery countries every two weeks. So if you begin to play the quiz too much and start to memorize the mystery countries, just wait two weeks and the list will be fresh again! :)
