In 2019, Reindeer went extinct in the lower 48 of the United States. they roamed northern New England and upper Midwestern States. The last wild reindeer in the lower 48 was a female who was taken to British Columbia and is currently scheduled to be released into the Canadian wild.

One of the last nomadic reindeer herders are the Dukha, a Tuvan Turkic group in Mongolia, At first, the Mongolian government repeatedly deported them back to Tuva. In 1956 the government finally gave them Mongolian citizenship and resettled them at Tsagaan Nuur Lake on the Shishigt River.

Reindeer eyes alternate between blue in the winter to adapt to darker conditions and gold in the spring.
