Maybe rephrase the 1st question. Considering there were already people there, Cook couldn't be the first person to discover Australia. Also maybe accept just aborigine instead of being so specific.

Captain Cook was by no means the first European to discover Australia. Tasman of course preceded him. But the first to discover Australia (other than the natives who were already there of course) was Willem Jansz (a.k.a. Janszoon) from the Netherlands who made landfall on the W coast in 1606, more than a century before Cook was even born.

I actually didn't know this - did some research and yes, it seems Cook was just following the trend of 'discovering' places. Added Jansz as a separate question and reworded the question for Cook.
