The Hyksos appeared in Egypt some time after, at which point both the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Dynasties had, for some reason, been weakened. Because of this, the Hyksos were able to invade both Dynasties, and established the Fifteenth Dynasty. This caused a power vacuum in the south of Egypt, which had been ruled by the Thirteenth Dynasty, allowing the Egyptian Sixteenth Dynasty to form. The Hyksos then conquered this Dynasty as well, if only briefly. As such the Seventeenth Dynasty could form, which coexisted peacefully with the Hyksos. Eventually, three figures defeated the Hyksos: Seqenenre Tao, ruler of a local kingdom; Kamose, the last king of the Seventeenth Dynasty; and Ahmose, who became the first pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty.

Ṭāriq was appointed governer of Tangier by Musa ibn Nusayr, an Umayyad governer and Arab general, after its conquest in 710-711. Elsewhere in Morocco, the Visigothic Count of Ceuta, Julian, sent his daughter to the court of the Visigothic king of Spain, Roderic, to receive an education. It is said that Roderic raped her, so Julian planned to have the Muslims bring down the Visigothic kingdom. He entered into a treaty with Ṭāriq, and provided him with ships so he could secretly land an army at the Rock of Gibraltar. His army consisted of 7,000 Berber horsemen and 5,000 reinforcements sent by Musa, but he faced an army of 100,000 commanded by Roderic. Ṭāriq won the battle, known as the Battle of Guadalete, and Roderic was killed during the fighting. Ṭāriq, after splitting his army, went on to capture Córdoba, Granada and Toledo (among other places); he was present for the capture of the latter. He later captured Guadalajara and Astorga, making him the de facto governer of Hispania until Musa arrived the following year.
